1987 was an extreme outlier in terms of offense in MLB. Ryan lead the NL with a 2.76 ERA. 3.03 was 2nd, 3.06 3rd. Gooden was 5 th at 3.21 by contrast in 86 Mike Scott led NL 2.22, 2.76?would have be 4th, 7th was 2.92. In 88 2.18 lead NL, 2.76 doesn't make the top 10. It's back half of top 10 in 85 and 89 as well.

And the 87 Astros were 76-86, actually 3rd in NL West, not good but not like say the 2011-2013 Astros

Same reson Drew Brees will hold every passing record and zero mvp trophies. It's absurd

I fear this will derail the thread...but Drew Brees is a better quarterback than Nolan Ryan was a pitcher.

Check his stats. He was great at strike outs when he was on but a lot of times he was very hittable.

his stats show that he is the MLB career leader in fewest hits allowed per 9 innings at 6.6. I wouldn't call that very hittable. He led the majors in that stat 12 times as well. His win/loss record is what it is because of where he played. But yes, he did walk a lot of people and threw a lot of wild pitches

I'm sure he'd have some if the NFL had separate trophies for each conference

i'd be curious to see who beat him out these years. probably writers over-valuing wins

One year, Ryan led the NL in ERA and strikeouts, and finished 8-16.

ETA. That was the first time the league leader in those two categories did not win the Cy Young, much less finish with a losing record.

This actually makes sense. From what I remember the games that Ryan limited his walks/wild pitches he was usually dominate. However I remember many teams turning those walks and wild pitches into runs, especially since it was really easy to run on Ryan. And he also played before the steroid era where every team had 4-5 guys that could really run the bases. I seem to remember guys like Vince Coleman giving Ryan fits, they would draw a walk, steal 2nd and 3rd, then go home on a wild pitch.

The Astros had two of the hardest-throwing (and wildest) pitchers of that era in Ryan and J. R. Richard, no stranger to a wild pitch or three.

He played 27 seasons and only had 324 wins. Sure that's a lot cumulatively speaking but it only averages to a little over 10 wins a season

Uh, doesn't 324/27=12?

Not relevant, but I was confused

If Ryan had played for the Yankees he would have been the Babe Ruth of pitchers.

I don't care what anyone says, what he did at his age will never be duplicated. To pitch for 27yrs at his level is pretty damn amazing.

Had absolutely no run support that year. I remember it well being a longsuffering Astros fan.

To pitch that long as a power pitcher is what's so ridiculous.

He allowed the fewest hits per 9, but you have to factor in the total baserunners per 9 into that as well. If sabermetrics tell us OBP is a better factor than BA, then we have to factor that in to pitcher stats.
Conversely, the stats would love a dude striking out that many. H should've gotten 1 cy probably

Each year someone had a little better year.
Cy young is not a career award.
