You're missing the point. Wilson gets less criticism from the general public because he is humble, period.

If the Newton hate was so racially motivated, why doesn't it extend to Wilson?

Answer - because the vast majority of people who dislike Newton do so because of his antics, not the color of his skin.

FTR, I'm a pretty big fan of Newton and my post history will show it. I just don't like this idea that disliking Newton = racism.

Don't be obtuse. Last year we had all of the shite about whether Russell Wilson was "black enough."

quote:

It has to be because one is "blacker" than the other because unlike white people, who can have a variety of reasons for disliking an athlete, black people only have that one reason.

That is my exact point. The idea that white folks dislike Newton because he is black falls apart at the seams when you consider the fact that Wilson is generally liked.

A rational observer would see that it has a lot to do with how they carry themselves on/off the field. A race-baiter will make it into something much more.

I'm simply calling out the hypocrisy of those race baiters.

Then following it with another racial generalization.

Sure, but I'm willing to bet a significant portion of people who don't think Wilson is black enough simultaneously embrace Newton.

I don't think that generalization is a stretch. At all.

You can. I'm pulling for the Broncos and no one has called me a racist.
That's probably because you're quite obviously the least racist towards black people...person on this board.

Am I wrong?

Who is more widely embraced in the black community, Cam Newton or Russel Wilson?

Why do you think that is?

You did a survey?

Michael Jordan is fair!y well liked in the " Black Community " although he has no opinion on any issue , loves his cliche sport speak( like Wilso who probably really means it unlike Jordan)) ,etc....Even abandoned his gold chains / Kangols from the 80's ( more an age/ era thing).

I'm not sure why that is such a hard thing to believe.

RGIII was called a cornball brother.

Wilson was criticized for not being "black enough."

Link me to similar statements/criticisms of Newton.

Cam wanted all of the attention and he pulled out the race card to get it. Notice how no one gave a shite Wilson was black the last few years

Yes, but if someone asks why youre pulling for the Broncos and you say "because I dont like Cam Newton", more times than not it will be assumed that a racial reasoning is behind it.

If you know why you don't like him and it has nothing to do with race, then why does it matter what people think? You know the truth. It shouldn't bother you at all.

By whom? A few reporters ?

" They" ( whomever you are speaking of) asked the same nonsense about Barack Obama ,but he has a nearly 90% approval rating among Blacks. Record turn out among Blacks at the election polls.

Stop listening to a few media personalities & think that makes one an expert on how the " Black Community " thinks.

When did Rob Parker become spokesman of black people? Is the problem you see someone black talking on ESPN and that's the extent of your dealings with black people so that's the "black voice" to you?

See I disagree with this notion.

IMO, Cam pretty much minds his own business and isn't trying to flaunt the fact that he is black. Everyone knows he's black, no need to proclaim it to the world.

However, the media wants a story, and the biggest story they can get is the juxtaposition of the black villain against the white golden boy. They've put Cam in a corner and ask him stupid questions like "what does it mean to be a black QB in the SB" while Manning gets questions like "what does it mean to be a QB in the SB."

The media wants us to care about his race, and he has been baited into giving them exactly what they want.

That isn't the extent of it by any means. Read articles, browse online comments, sort through Twitter. It may be a vocal minority that thinks that way, but their position is clear.

I'd say that Charles Barkley has a pretty good grasp of the black community, no?

quote:

There are a lot of black people who are unintelligent, who don't have success," Barkley said. "It's best to knock a successful black person down 'cause they're intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they're successful. It's crabs in a barrel. ... We're the only ethnic group that says, 'hey, if you go to jail, it gives you street cred.' "

quote:

"Unfortunately, as I tell my white friends, we as black people, we're never going to be successful not because of you white people but because of other black people," Barkley said. "When you're black, you have to deal with so much crap in your life from other black people. It's a dirty, dark secret; I'm glad it's coming out."

quote:

"For some reason we're brainwashed to think if you're not a thug or an idiot, you're not black enough. If you go to school, make good grades, speak intelligent and don't break the law, you're not a good black person," he said. "It's a dirty dark secret. I hate to bring white people into our crap, but as a black person, we all go through it when you're successful."

Great post.

The only thing I disagree is "the media wanting us to care about race'. The sports media simply wants a story to fill these empty 2 Super Bowl weeks( deflate gate, spy gate, Terrell Owens leg,etc....)

Doug Williams , Russell Wilson , McNabb would have given the ' boring' cliche answer............ " Black ,White ,Plaid or Polka
Dot"...that they are simply NFL QBs who want to win the game.

Cam simply refused to give the sport speak & the media absolutely loves it.

The Charles Barkely who says he hates White people, spit on an 8 year old White girl courtside ,etc.....?

The Barkley that admits he never had to take a " real job" in his entire life?

No. He is no spokesman for the "Black Community".

Barkley would not even claim that.

I know they're just trying to fill the void, but they've been building Cam into this villain for a long time. He's no more arrogant than many of the other QBs in the league, yet he's the one who is plastered all over the TV every week doing the Superman and dab etc.

I'm adamant that the majority of the hate comes his way because of the light the media puts him in to begin with. People who hardly watch football know Cam is arrogant but couldn't tell you a damn thing about Rodgers and the discount double check shite.
