Is this the year a #16 seed finally upsets a #1?

I've watched a bunch of Kansas games this year, and they don't impress me at all. No down low presence, Jackson can't make a FT, and won't have the benefit of getting all the calls in the tourney like they do at home. They will be a quick exit this year

Probably not. Those games are very rarely even somewhat close.

I still trust Kansas over some 16-14 Mississippi Valley State University School of the Deaf and Blind school

Kansas owns Baylor, but if they lose tonight and then lose at Baylor, they'd be tied for the Big 12 lead.

Definitely a weak 1 line this year across the board. Bubble sucks too.

Maybe. Last time Gonzaga was a #1 Southern-BR had them on the ropes late. Gonzaga is always a good, well coached team, but I don't think they have the overall individual talent that would allow them to completely mail it in and still do just enough to win like a Duke, UNC, Kansas, etc.

For it to happen I think it will take a #16 who could knock down some threes matched and play a little D vs a #1 who is just avg. on D and not a great 3 point shooting team.

If they make it there, I think Baylor would be the best candidate for a potential upset

Good No 1 seeds have had struggles in the 16-1 game - it's definitely possible.

It'll happen eventually. I know we've never seen it, but it's been close a couple times in the last 10 years. Alabany had near a double-digit lead mid-way through the 2nd half on UConn in like 2007. Obviously Southern almost beating Gonzaga.

And I mean, more and more 15 seeds are beating 2 seeds recently. I know 16 seeds are usually a lot worse than 15 seeds, but still it might suggest that we are getting closer to it happening? Idk.

Recently they've gotten worse...used to be a huge divide, not anymore...

Look at the progression...

#1 vs. #16

2013: Kansas 64, Western Kentucky 57

2013: Gonzaga 64, Southern 58

2012: Syracuse 72, UNC-Asheville 65

2009: Pittsburgh 79, ETSU 69

2006: UConn 72, Albany 59

2002: Kansas 70, Holy Cross 59

1997: North Carolina 82, Fairfield 74

1996: Purdue 73, Western Carolina 71

1990: Michigan State 75, Murray State 71 (OT)

1989: Georgetown 50, Princeton 49

I agree with that. Any low mid major team is going to get owned down low against Baylor, but if that team gets hot from 3 vs that zone and Baylor isn't hitting their shots it could be interesting.
I'm not sure of the exact numbers but in the past 5 years or so the number of 15 seeds wins has exceeded the previous 40 yrs combined. With the two extra play in games it eliminates another one of the worst 16 seeds and pushes back a what would be 15 seed in previous years to a 16 seed. If we can have a year where all of the best teams from these lower conferences win their tournaments and make the dance then we could finally see a 16 over a 1

If I had to guess whether it will happen in the next, let's say, 12 years or not, I'd probably guess that it will.

That Cuse UNc Asheville game was close throughout. And if I remember correctly there were some questionable calls down the stretch which is to be expected in a 1v16 game I guess

It was the worst officiated NCAA game I've ever seen

I had a UNC Asheville +1200 ticket and it made me gag. Even the Syracuse backers at the LVH that day were crying BS.

This is the key

The last few years there have been too many conference tournament upsets in the single bid leagues sending crappy teams to the 16 line.

If you want a 16 to beat a 1 you need to root for order and non chaos in single bid league tourneys.

Gonzaga, specifically Kelly Olynyk, got major help from the zebras as well in that game. Not as bad as UNC Asheville but it was bad.

My opinion the only way a 16 will beat a 1 is if it's a blowout. Like when FGCU beat Georgetown or Coppin State beat South Carolina. Start to finish rout. Otherwise the refs and NCAA will never let it happen. From my memory the only 16s that have has double digit 2nd half leads were Albany in 2006 and Coastal Carolina in 2014. Neither obviously were able to extend or maintain those leads.
