Anyone that bemoans a lack of skills in the current NBA just isnt paying attention

David Wesley commented on this the other night during the Pels game. Basically with AAU the kids play in a "pro style" system from day 1 and miss out on learning what used to be fundamentals that they didn't have to learn in the pros because you came in knowing it.

I think one factor that isn't just nostalgia is one and done. GMs are working with less of a resume when drafting players and players have less training and physical skill. Does anyone remember how relatively small Shaq was as a freshman? No way he has a 23/14/3.5 rookie year if he went to the pros after one year. Austin Rivers wouldn't have made history with how bad he was as a rookie if he would have still been playing at Duke last year. Maybe on total it works out the same as the busts are balanced by guys like Anthony Davis and LeBron James getting more experience against better competition than they would have in college, but there are a lot of young guys getting minutes today that would have been in college 20 years ago and their roster spot in the league would have been filled by someone else who would have gone through the same 3 year college vetting/training process.

I just think that evidence of a lack of skills is anecdotal. We remember the great teams, forget the lousy ones of the past. The great teams of today are just as incredible as the past. Different, yes, but the contenders we've seen the last few years are amazing teams comparable to whatever golden era we want to talk about. Now you ask me from late 90s to mid 2000s and I am on the lack of skills boat.

Re: development- Are there guys who need time to develop? Sure. Always have been, but I dont know how much better college is than the NBA for that with more teams wising up to the D League.

In my fake world, the D League turns into more of a Euro style academy for young players. Guys have that option or can go the college route.

This is of course fantasy because colleges make way too much $$$ off CBB and NBA owners wouldn't be willing to spend for that investment.
