Is there anything more overrated than combine scores?

I'm seeing arguments that some guy named Trubisky is as good a prospect as Deshaun Watson. Every year some nobody shoots up the draft boards for no reason. I'm open to hearing about the ones that panned out..

For every Terrell Suggs & Tom Brady who sucked, there's a Vernon Gholston & Troy Williamson who were combine HOF'ers

He was touted as possibly the best QB before the combine. Watson was inconsistent all season which is why Mitchell, consistent qb and winner in life, is considered the better prospect.

The problem is in how people use them. The one position where they're a solid predictor of NFL success is edge rusher. Otherwise it should be used as a baseline; players with below average NFL athleticism don't generally turn out to be great players outside of olinemen and qbs.

I think it's beneficial to find out if the players have enough athleticism to actually play in the NFL. Jarvis Jones, Michael Sam, and Ali Highsmith had great college careers, but just not enough athleticism to be viable NFL players or live up to the hype.

Wentz did this last year and he looked better than Goff who played for a P5 conference school

No doubt. But performance on the big stage is the true barometer. I think of the WR Al Davis had to have because he torched his 40. He took a flyer and I don't know if he ever caught a pass. Granted, ancient Al Davis might not be the best example.

Heyward-Bay. Perfect example of you're OP. He took an "honorable mention" All-ACC guy over Crabtree, the Bilitnekoff winner.

If he can't even make a 3rd team ACC, how TF could he expect to be worthy of a top 10 NFL selection?!

Thing is there are multiple reasons why a player may flame out in the NFL. It can be difficult to determine which guys will simply not give a frick when they get their money.

Overall I think you still have to pick the guys that project to be able to play this game at a high level based on their talent. Players can always acquire motivation, they can't acquire talent.

The biggest knock has been why couldn't he beat out other UNC QB's for 3 yrs that couldn't sniff an NFL training camp
