Saban isn't a genius as a coach, but he is a good coach. His strength is his recruiting. Look at the Rivals ratings for the last several years. He has a knack for recruiting and he is tireless and he puts the best athletes on the field. His success is directly attributable to his recruiting success. Coaching at a school like bama only enhances his success, because they stay out of his way and will not deny him anything that will help him win.
Bama's rivals recruiting rank.
2008-1
2009-1
2010-5
2011-1
2012-1
2013-1
2014-1 so far
If you want to beat him, hire a coach that is also a relentless and successful recruiter and give him whatever support he needs.

There are 2 that I can think of, and both are in the NFC west.
Though I doubt harbaugh or Carroll ever coach a game against Saban in their lives so we will never know.
I think urban Meyer could as well.

You LSU/Miles homers are hilarious. No one puts Les Miles in the same league as Saban.
You're an idiot. Don't let actual games played get in the way of your idiotic statement.

I'm not saying Les is horrendous, but he's not on par with Saban. Be real.

Bama was extremely unlucky this year to not be in the title game. They could have blown the Auburn game and still gotten there, if it weren't for the miracle AU got against Georgia. Basically, it was two miracles that kept them out.
Bama didn't have that game locked up against Auburn. Even without the return TD, Bama very easily could have still lost.

there's plenty of coaches out there, but only a handful of Alabama caliber programs

If Les isn't, who is? And before you say nobody, realize that Saban doesn't even win the west every year. Hell, he doesn't even win it half the time. So apparently there are coaches out there winning against him at least every other year. LSU and Auburn have both done it recently, and there's no real reason to think Bama will just win every year.
