If you really want to talk about which team deserved to be there, look at strength of schedule. The Patriots* only beat one team with a winning record all season--the Ravens in the AFFCG.

This is why a playoff is necessary if every team isn't going to play each other. I'd be more in favor of the NFC/AFC having a round robin with the winners playing in the Super Bowl. Maybe have playoff games within conferences to break ties.

What if Seattle would've won the Super Bowl last year with a losing record in the regular season. Would you still make the same argument?

well they didn't. They did beat the Saints and I tip my hat to them for that but they were bounced out the next week, in convincing fashion. Look, the Giants got healthy on the D-line towards the end of the year. I didn't like watching New York win it all. The Saints beat the brakes off this team earlier this year and I believe we would have beaten them again if given the chance. But we blew that opportunity by turning the ball over five times against the 49ers and losing. Championship teams step up when they need to, the Giants did that.

No doubt. My point is that my league would make them step up a lot more before the month of December.

The two recent Giants super bowl wins are exhibits A and B as to why playoffs devalue the regular season. The bcs isnt great, but the nfl playoffs dont ome close to croning the best team either.

This Giants team was embarrased by the Saints late in the year and lost a half dozen other games. Yay champs.

YES

people will say that college teams have to play great all year, not just when the playoffs come, but that just isnt the case.

In the NFL every single game is difficult to win. While in CFB some teams only play a handful of tough games all year and then only have to win 1 postseason game to be crowned the best of 100+ teams.

A playoff matches the best teams of the year and makes them play each other to determine who is really the best. More, Meaningful Football.

So,I guess you would eliminate the NCAA basketball tournament also.

The NCAA tournament is a freaking joke when it comes to crowning a champion. It's good fun for the first weekend, but that's about it. After all the drama about Bama getting a shot without winning its conference, think about UConn. They were 9th in their conference and then won the championship. That's just silly. And it's worse because basketball is easy to have a good champion, because series are easy to do with a quick turnaround between games.

i just don't think football is a very conducive sport to a good champion crowning system. The game is too physical and the turnaround time between games is far too long.

Series rounds and low numbers of playoff teams are the best, which is why MLB kicks the crap out of all of the major domestic sports.

Meh, of the 4 major US pro sports, I think MLB has the best way of determining a champ, but it's still flawed. Obviously, the NBA and NHL essentially render their regular seasons meaningless. The NFL does this as well, to a lesser extent. MLB's regular season is valued the most, IMO; however, the problem I have with MLB is that the game changes in the post-season. In the regular season, you need a 5 man rotation to win games all year long, but in the post-season, you can win with only 3. And, now they're adding another wild card, so that'll increase the probability that an unworthy team is crowned champion.

the NBA has the most meaningful regular season bc home court matters so much

Home field advantage is big in NFL too though. Certain teams are built to play well on the road but a team like the Saints need home field. The colts were another one that needed it. Just depends on your style of football.

Point taken, but you have to admit,it's hard to say the giants were the best team after the saints game.i just find it interesting how the bcs is roundly criticized, while the nfl playoffs are praised.i don't believe either are a 100% measure of best team

considering a 9-7 team just won the super bowl,is it really a better measure of the best team?

It determines the league champion but not the best team. New Orleans and green bay were both better. Overall the AFC was fairly weak IMO

No, they are different. Neither is better than the other, they are just different. BCS probably crowns the better best team than what the NFL does.
