Is Erik Spoelstra a top 5 coach?

Clearly underrated. Pretty incredible what hes done with best player injured

Never respected his ability when he had the Big 3. With no Lebron and Bosh around, he's still got Miami in good position. Definitely have gained a lot of respect for his coaching ability in the last couple of years.

He will continue to be perpetually shite on despite the fact that the NBA is the most difficult of major sports in the US to build a strong team. It requires 2-3 big name players and a deep bench, but certain coaches don't get the benefit of the doubt when they have those players, while certain coaches do.

I wasn't arguing against him being top 5. I was saying I never appreciated his coaching ability until I watched him do it without Lebron and Bosh (I didn't know who he was before Lebron went there).

He's gonna have a shot to win this series without Lebron, Whiteside, Bosh, and a bunch of young players like Winslow and Richardson playing very significant minutes. He's good. He's playing against a team with two legitimate all stars too.

The guy clearly has a great basketball mind. That is obvious from the fact that Riley respects him so much. I think he is probably improving when it comes to dealing with egos and such. And I'm not sure any coach can actually deal with LeBron. That guy would try to get Popovich fired.

Yeah Spoelstra is in or on the immediate outskirts of the Top 5. I know I'm leaving out Rivers but I don't get the love there.
At the end of the day, the "best" coaches in the NBA are ALWAYS surrounded by the best talent. Always has been and always will be. Everyone thinks Pop is the best, but we really don't know when you have the luxury of his 3 players being replaced by Leonard and Aldridge going forward. Phil Jackson had Jordan and Kobe.

I mean he just won a playoff game with Justice Winslow ay Center. I don't think he's Top 5, but he right there. I'd go: Kerr, Pop, Carlisle,

Pop's 2014 title is pretty impressive, but it pales to Carlisle's 2011 title.

Would you guys consider Doc a Top 5 coach? I'm just brainstorming who's really a a upper echelon coach in the league. There is just so much turnover in the NBA

He is borderline but not quite top 5 IMO.

Kerr
Carlisle
Stevens
Stotts
Technically Thibs is coaching again so he would slide above Stevens IMO.
Then you could make the case for Spoelstra. Probably a notch above Budenholzer but maybe below Rivers.
I know some would disagree with Stevens and Stotts but they both have consistently defied expectations time and again. The Blazers were supposed to be a lottery team and Stevens is probably the best young coach in while who has really elevated his roster.

I love Stevens, Stotts and Bud, but you have to put into account the 2 titles he's won, plus the run he's making now with an aging star and 0 big men. But I do hear your argument and wouldn't really argue with putting those three in there. Especially Stotts
