It could actually force us to an expanded playoff format to create more meaningful games. Losing big name players hurts bowl marketability, potentially driving down viewership and sponsor dollars. There will likely be a major reaction by the NCAA and bowl representatives to address a trend that will only grow as the business side of being a star player supercedes the "being a team player" angle. It will be interesting to see what other options come from this.

They will probably just add more bowl games for all the poor 4-8 teams that don't get to go.

i'm interested to see how they handle it too. i'm sure they will be crying that these players who they make millions of dollars off of are protecting their best financial interest in sitting out of these meaningless money-grab games.

if they extended the playoff to 8, both LF and McCaffery would still be sitting out

Except the NCAA has no input on the bowls/playoff....

You can't have the conversation without the NCAA, and the university presidents and administrators, at the table. There are a lot of layers to this onion. You may even see a revival of talks regarding player representation, additional compensation, bowl-paid insurance, etc.
I think this is a subject that will turn out to be huge, and Fournette and McCaffery are the catalyst.

No, the only solution is to eliminate bowl games. Up until 1992, there were only 15 bowl games. If they cut it down to 20-25 bowl games, it would help this problem a great deal. Make it so that teams need to be at least 8-4 to make a bowl game. It would at least add some value to making bowl games again.

Maybe not a great deal but you won't ever see players from say Mississippi State or Texas Tech skipping bowl games if you make it harder for them to make it to one.

Maybe. But if one of their players is a projected top 10 pick (or even first round pick), I think they would still skip a non-playoff bowl.

These guys are opening their eyes to the life changing money only 5 months away. Risking that for a bowl game doesn't make much sense.

Until the NFL cares, the players wont care. And there's nothing the NCAA can do.

I love this growing meme that the playoff has suddenly devalued bowl games. Were these people not around during the BCS? And personally, I enjoy seeing a real NC crowned every year rather than leaving it up to the sensibilities of poll voters.

Yes there are far too many "Who Cares" bowl games. But I'm excited for the big bowls. Michigan/Fl St, Auburn/Oklahoma, PennSt/USC, of course LSU/Louisville. When else do you get to see those matchups?

I think eventually it's going to lead to a separation of the power conferences and the smaller conferences.

The Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, and Pac 10 will essentially form their own league. The WAC, AAC, CUSA, etc. will become the de-facto D-1AA.

The top level will have a playoff. Probably in the neighborhood of at least 12 teams (like the NFL), but more likely 16 because there will be more college teams in the league than their are teams in the NFL. It will start to bring a little bit of March Madness to CFB.

I like that this is happening. Dan Wetzel at Yahoo Sports has covered this a lot about how there is really no pushback against the bowl insanity. Even though a lot of schools actually lose money on them, they are TV shows for ESPN, bowl commissioners make a lot of money, coaches get bonuses, players get a vacation and a bag of stuff, etc. Well, now the market is fighting back a bit.

They would never do this. There is too much money in it.

Got downvoted in the fournette thread but I wouldn't be surprised to see scholarship paperwork changed to include this stipulation.

Watch the schools put in a clause that the student has to pay back so much of they sit out without and injury or other valid reason.

So instead of 40 absolutely meaningless bowl games and 2 playoff games there would be 36 absolutely meaningless bowl games and 4 playoff games. This is brilliant.

Pay back what? All of the benefits they have received up until the announcement have been earned.
