Interesting trivia question - Peyton Manning related

So yesterday I was in my car listening to ESPN radio and they were wondering if Manning had ever been benched before. They seemed to erroneously come to the conclusion that he had in fact never been benched.
However he did get put on the bench in the 1998 Orange Bowl. I'm surprised that these "experts" didn't recall this because the results of that season ended in a controversial split title between Michigan and Nebraska. It was the last season before the BCS era and also the only season in which a defensive player won the Heisman.
Tee Martin came in the game late after Tennessee was only able to muster 9 points under the leadership of Peyton Manning.
There was a little over 4 minutes left in the game when Tee Martin went in and they were already down 42-9.
Video evidence here

Note, that most of the video from this point is them going back to the sideline to show Manning standing their in disbelief
Also of note - the split championship was probably the biggest farce in the history of college football and proves that AP voters are illiterate chimps. Nebraska defeated the #3 Tenn Volunteers who had Peyton Manning and Jamal Lewis on the lineup 42-17.
Michigan beat Wazzu 21-16 and the only player you've ever heard of on that team is Ryan Leaf.
Nebraska would have easily beaten Michigan on a neutral field.

Only in the SEC centric mind is beating a team with more well known players a better win.
Dear God.
Dear God.

You know that was Tom Osborne's retirement gift...

It was almost 20 years ago dude, time to move on.

They beat them 42-17
Washington State was ranked #7
4 total players got drafted that year from Washington State
8 got drafted from Tenn, 3 in the first round
Overall it was a much more talented team than Wazzu

That's not really a benching. That's waving the white flag of surrender and letting the future qb get a few snaps in a bowl game.
Yesterday was a benching.

I've always resented the Vols and Peyton a little for rolling over in that bowl game and splitting the titles. Nebraska probably beats Michigan that year, but Michigan did have a ridiculous defense.
But Woodson stole the Heisman, so that's a slight makeup.

He got choked out by an Ohio State linebacker during a game.

Oh, you mean the guy thats leading the NFL in interceptions this year stole the Heisman from ole Noodle arm who threw for 35 yards and 4 ints yesterday?

I don't know that they rolled over in that game. I think Nebraska was just that bad of a matchup for them
I'd be thankful you didn't have to play Nebraska and got a split of the title

I watched that game. It was extremely painful. Tennessee did not belong on the same field with Nebraska. Jamal Lewis was just a freshman at the time. Those 90's Nebraska teams were unreal - 1995 especially.
I like the symmetry of Nebraska destroying an SEC team for the title in 1995 (Florida), which then went on to destroy FSU the following year (FSU's team was fighting serious food poisoning). The next two years was the exact same set up - Nebraska destroyed an SEC team for the title in 1997 (Tennessee), which then went on to beat handily FSU the following year for the title (yet again, FSU was severely hamstrung with Weinke out and Outzen in at QB - Outzen couldn't hit the ground with the football if he was aiming for it).

Our school system should be ashamed, are they not teaching about gravity in science class any more? Common Core has ruined our schools.

That's not really a true benching, in the spirit of the term.

Also of note - Randy Moss was in the running that year
Ryan Leaf was the other of the 4
Not often that 3 out of the 4 Heisman candidates actually have that much success in the NFL. Really a historic year for college football in a lot of ways.

Perhaps not
But I'm counting it as him being benched

Definitely a unique year to have 3 NFL future hall-of-famers in the top 4 that year.
It's kind of like the 1989 draft. 4 of the top 5 picks are in the NFL hall-of-fame: Troy Aikman, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, and Derrick Thomas. Tony Mandarich, an offensive tackle, was the second pick overall by the Packers and did jack in the NFL, even becoming a drug addict along the way.
