Intentional Grounding?

Refs place ball at spot of throw and they lose that down, is that even a real penalty? Shouldn't they actually add an actual punishment on top of that besides where he would have been anyways?

What? It goes from just loss of down to the yardage lost AND loss of down.

Exactly..should be at least 5yds if not 10 from the spot as well....no deterrent at all....qbs should try it all the time before taking a sack

If an is about to get sacked and throws it away... It's like they are just awarding the sack but not penalizing qb for a rule violation.
Holding calls is 10 Yards from spot of holding.
Holding calls is 10 Yards from spot of holding.

and you replay the down.
Intentional grounding can be 5-10 yrds typically plus loss of down.

Ya I've always thought it was funny when announcers would say "that's a loss of down!" real seriously. As if an incompletion leads to some sort of different result

NFL don't they put ball at spot of foul and "loss of down"?
Posted on 10/29/15 at 8:40 pm to Chad504boy
No, technically it's 10 yards or the spot, whichever is more. Usually the QB is more than 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage so it gets placed at the spot.

So sometimes it's a marginal yard loss, sometimes no real penalty

And sometimes they throw a stupid INT instead of just taking the sack. It forces the QB to at least try and get it near a receiver or get out of the pocket.

I get that, they should have harsher penalty on the team

Similar to penalties near the endzones. As a defender, you can urinate on a guy with the offense on the 1 foot line and it's only a 6 inch penalty.

Not similar but seriously, I think in those situations, the ball never seems halfway closer to line. Damn refs dey cheet

Minimum to a ten yard loss.
Many times a sack isn't totally imminent when QBs intentionally ground. So in those cases, it's a pretty rough penalty.
