In what sport is depth the most important?

Obviously you want a deep team in every sport, but which sport do you think depth plays the biggest role? Is it having a team with a great 3rd/4th lines in hockey? Is it most important in football when you constantly see lineman and DBs go down injured? Having a nine or ten man rotation in basketball?

For me it's either football or depth in the MLB in pitching rotations and the bullpen.

Yeah, I think pitching depth is up there on my list

CFB
It's the reason games are fairly close in the first half, then after halftime the Big Boy programs pull away for 35 point victories with their deeper benches

While this is true in some cases, CFB is also usually the last level where someone can beat an entire team almost single handedly. Reggie Bush against Fresno St. or Lamar Jackson in particular.
You never see people post performances like that in the NFL because the depth is so deep at literally every position of every team.

I think you have to say a pitching rotation is the runaway #1, then the conversation about other sports can begin.

Hockey - top players only play 20 minutes a night so that means for 2/3 of the game they aren't playing. A team like the Oilers with attorcious depth has finished last or near last for 8 or 9 years despite getting ultra high end skill. The game is constantly moving too so you can isolate players easily to exploit them, I would say it is one of the largest reasons coaches use so many systems nowadays

1a. football - Ultimate team sport. Injuries happen in this sport more than any other, and you have to have a deep front 7 on defense as part of your rotation for every game.
1b. Baseball - depth in the lineup isn't all that important, comparatively speaking, but pitching depth in your rotation and bullpen is very important, honestly it coild be argued it's every bit as important as depth in football
3. Hockey - don't really follow Hockey but I know they rotate units in and out constantly throughout the game, and they action is nonstop. I could be off base putting hockey lower, but I'm just going out on a limb
4. Basketball - pretty much no one uses a 10 man rotation in the playoffs. For instance, in game 7 of the NBA finals, Cleveland only played 8 players and only 7 of them played more than 5 minutes. Only 7 Warriors (one of the deeper teams in the league) played more than 8 minutes.
5. Soccer - soccer only allows 3 subs per game, so obviously depth isn't going to be as much of a factor generally

Erik Karlsson played 28+ minutes per game last season and I'd be willing to bet that at least the top 50 players in time on the ice, per game is more than 20 minutes. So more than 1/3rd of every single game.

I can see that argument. I guess I envisioned a lack of depth as a stud and 4 scrubs, not 2 solid guys.

This is incorrect, you'd be shocked at how often teams are having to play guys due to injury who literally wouldn't be chosen to play otherwise.
It doesn't happen to every single team, every single year, but almost every season there's 2-3 teams that get decimated by injuries.

injuries happen all the time in all sports. in any given game, however, depth in not as important in soccer.

Football cause of injuries and physical demand of every play, Soccer cause of season length, or Hockey cause of how many players have to play. I think I'd have to go with football though cause being able to rotate in quality defenders, running backs, and receivers is a massive advantage.
I know for sure it is not Basketball or Baseball though.

Lol you clearly know nothing about it then.
In football, baseball, hockey you can literally just sign a guy midweek if you need a new player. In soccer, if somehow six of your starters get hurt, most teams are going to have to use youth squad players. So teenagers in most cases.
Just because you only have three subs doesn't make depth an issue.

Football, easily.
First of all there's just more players in football than basketball and baseball, and you have different units: offense, defense, special teams. You also have different packages with different personal in all 3 phases. This is the sport where a lack of depth is most likely to be exposed.
Basketball you need a couple of star players, some role players, an okay bench, and you will be fine. I would agree with some of the other posters that depth is pretty important in baseball, but it's also a streaky sport where a dominant ace can carry your team, or your hitters just catch fire at the right time
