I think "ball striker" is just a vague way to describe a players ability.

IMO there are basically 5 phases
Driving
Long iron
Short iron
Chipping
Putting.
Ball striker refers more to how pure a player hits his irons, imo.

This. When other players stop to watch a player hit balls, you know they've got it. It happens at every event.

Not true. Go watch Ben Crane. Sounds like he's hitting aluminum cans. He scrapes that bitch around every day. Putts like a beast though.

Just love watching Adam Scott hit the ball. Not sure what his statistics are but seems to be perfect everytime. Except when he gets to the green. Ditch that putter and leave it for the guys on champions tour. I know his putting has been good this weekend just not a fan of anchored putters.

Say what?

They miss shots all the time. In golf terminology that doesn't mean actually whiffing

I found this via a Google search:

"Ball Striking is computed by totaling a player's rank in both Total Driving [computed by totaling a player's rank in both Driving distance and Driving accuracy] and Greens in Regulation." This numerical total is compared to other players and the player with the lowest total rank becomes #1 and so on up the ladder.

by dante I have never understood "ball striker" when talking about PGA players.......it's no different than asking which kickers are the best ball strikers in the NFL. ALL of them are good ball strikers....otherwise they wouldn't be playing on tour.

Makes more sense in tennis

Now it's Stenson. It was Chad Cambell. Before him it was Snead.

Not sure how Chad wasn't mentioned yet. He is considered one of the best ball strikers of all time.

The best "pure" striker of the ball I've seen in a while is probably Graham DeLaet...that guy can make the ball do whatever he wants. I'm pretty sure he's up there on the PGA tour in Strokes Gained category. Also Hunter Mahan ain't too shabby!

Shouldn't the best ball striker be the guy that's winning more frequently than his opponents? Jordan Speith maybe?

Jordan is a good striker, but it's his putting that separates him from the rest
