I'm surprised lovie smith isn't doing better than 1-4 so far at Illinois

You'd think someone that was qualified enough to get an NFL HC job and who actually made some noise in the league would use his coaching skills to at least beat Purdue and Cincinnati.

He has a pretty dated defensive philosophy, doesn't he? Might be wrong. Hell their defense might be playing well, idk. And it's super early, give him time.

The cover two isnt dated. He doesn't have the talent plus the college game is a totally different brand of football from a scheme POV.

That's a perplexing job. No one has had sustained success since Ray Eliot in the 1950s. And that's loosely using the term "success". The state of Illinois has high school talent. And is surrounded by states with it.

It sounds like Lovie might bench Wes Lunt for the sophomore Crouch.
If you're intent on rebuilding the program, that's not a bad move. Lunt is done after this year, and he was a pretty average QB when he was healthy.

I think he needs at least 3 years (this year plus 2 more) to properly evaluate if he's making positive change there. He has to have time to purge the bad apples/poor fits and get his guys in there.

It amazes me how people underestimate the ability of coaches in Division I college football. I would actually say it's much more difficult for a defensive coach to succeed in college than in the NFL for various reasons. In the NFL, offenses tend to be homogeneous but in college football, a coach has to prepare for many different offenses over the course of a season. They also have don't have the caliber of athletes in college like they have in pros so it's a lot harder to win games by having a ball-control offense and relying on a great defense to consistently make stops.

The Bucs had Lavonte David and Gerald McCoy and other serviceable players though.
On the other hand I can't think of any well known college defensive teams running a cover 2? In the College games there's just so much WTF plays.

Lovie needs some time. He hasn't coached in college for 20 years and wasn't hired until March, mere days after the new AD was hired.
The school also dragged their feet on the player abuse allegations, firing Beckman, firing the former AD and doing a proper coaching search. Shahid Khan reportedly even offered contacts and resources to admins, but the only thing they did was take the interim tag off of Bill Cubit for a few months.
Basically, recruiting was dead for a roster that was already short on talent thanks to Beckman.

Rivals tells us they have 1 four star (from Miami Fla) and the rest 3 stars coming in for 2017.
If they had a premier player in Illinois, he would go to Michigan or if Catholic, to ND. ND owns Chicago.
