Exactly.

Terry Fontenot just signed his own resignation. The best way to move forward is to trade Penix to one of those willing parties. What a fricking waste of draft capital. Utter waste.

Great conversation on Rusillo’s podcast between him and McShay on the Pick.

Penix Jr. moves well in the pocket and throws with good anticipation underneath and incredible accuracy down the field in tight coverage. If he's healthy and upright he has a chance to be a high-quality starter.

And?
Should the 49ers and Chiefs have moved up to draft Bowers?

Kirk is 35 off a blown achilles tendon, so injury/durability are just as concerning as they are with Penix.

So you're injury risks are just as concerning with your 24 year old rookie as they are with 35 year old vet. That's not a good thing

quote:

by many accounts is the best pure passer in the draft

Well that's just not true at all. He throws the best deep ball, and that's about it. He had a 23% uncatchable rate on incomplete passes. The highest of any draft eligible QB, and the most throws into tight coverage. He's not the best pure passer.

quote:

I think ATL is hoping they can get 1-2 healthy playoff seasons out of Kirk

You don't give a guy 100 MILLION and HOPE for one or two years of playoffs

quote:

his decline begins and at that point turn the reigns over to Penix and deal Kirk to a contending team kind of like the Jets aim with acquiring Rodgers.

Nobody is trading for 37/38 year old Cousins with that contract. And He has a no trade clause right?

quote:

If Kirk does get injured in year one or two, you have better odds of making the playoffs with Penix as you do with someone like Marcus Mariota or Taylor Heinicke.

And you know this how? He's not a top 10 draft QB. Even if a team needed a QB, that was a reach, much less one that doesn't need it. He was a 2nd or 3rd round guy. He carved up crappy Pac-12 defenses and is a career ending injury waiting to happen. He's not going to be a good NFL QB. It was a terrible pick.

I understand this rationale, but if the Falcons are worried about the durability of Cousins and think they may only get 2-3 years out of him then why did they give him a $180 million contract with $100 million of that guaranteed?

Buyer’s remorse is only thing I can come up with

Not this year. Maybe in year 3 of Penix

The Saints DID NOT try to trade up for Michael Penix Jr., a very reliable source said. Was told, "It never happened."

Only thing dumber than what the Falcons did would be to trade up by giving up picks and then drafting Penix.

I doubt it too.

Cousins isn't Joe Montana and yet the Niners traded for Steve Young while Montana was still in his prime. That worked out pretty well.

If penix was 21, I don't think people would be as harsh. He's turning 24, so it's possible he might not play until 26-27.

Or be the starter for the whole season.

Not to mention in 2028 Penix will be 28 fricking years old. Guy would be the projected first year starting with maybe 4-5 years on average left in the tank.

I feel like Penix's age in this situation is potentially a benefit.

Qb's prime years are what? 27, 29, 31?

You can maybe have a window now with Cousins, then go all in with a gunslinger ramping up to his near prime.

I think NFL teams don't go hard enough at QB in the draft because you honestly can't win without a good one. They should draft a top one every year.
