I believe it was the 2000 LSU - Alabama game that had an "illegal" replay that was key.

After a punt they refs mysteriously signaled first down for Alabama, But there was absolutely no question that LSU had possession of the ball.

The video board showed the replay over and over, and LSU's coach at the time pointed to it. After a few minutes of "conferring" (watching TV) the refs made the right call.

I believe replay became official the next year

The Swindle in the Swamp in '03 was one of the main catalysts for replay being implemented across all conferences in 2005.

Big Ten had replay for the 2004 season.
