I googled for a minute but probably not enough, but please help answer this dumbass question of mine that I've been discussing with people lately and everyone just kinda agreed that we weren't sure....

Can you go "Wire to Wire" in baseball if you are technically not in first for a day or two but still undefeated? Take the NL Central for example, which is the root of this discussion. Can the Cubs (if they win tonight) or the Reds (lol, but go with it) be considered "wire to wire" champions even though they were both technically half a game behind the Pirates for a period of time before winning their game to catch up?

Our conclusion was that you can consider yourself "wire to wire" as long as you keep up in the loss column. Lemme know if this is general knowledge and we are all dumb asses or just kinda not ever brought up, which was more along the lines of what we thought. Thanks.

I would say it goes by the end of each day. I don't think there's a hard and fast rule though.

Well technically no one could ever be wire to wire in a game because it starts 0-0. IMO, you are still in the running for wire to wire if you are undefeated.

No at 0-0 you are tied for first so you're in first.

As for the 2 who said "end of day", after yesterday, the Pirates were 3-0 while the Reds and Cubs were undefeated but not 3-0. They eliminated from wire to wire?

It's gotta be the loss column IMO

I meant in a specific game, when a team goes wire to wire in basketball typically.

I think for basketball games it's pretty straight forward. You have to hold the lead from the first point scored on to lead wire to wire.
