With the format usually proposed as the 5 major conference champions plus the best groups of 5 team plus the 2 top "wild cards" which would be auto slotted into the 7 and 8 seeds

Michigan (8)
At
Bama (1)

Oklahoma (5)
At
Penn State (4)

Winners play in Atlanta

Western Michigan (6)
At
Washington (3)

Ohio State (7)
At
Clemson (2)

Winners play at Glendale

Final 4 would be OU, Bama, Clemson, and Western Michigan.

Sounds good to me...

I only wish that ALL conference championship games put the top 2 teams in the conference against each other instead of division winners.
Divisions would be for scheduling purposes only.

This is what the Big 12 is going to starting next year and I think it is great!

Why? No reason a committee can't re-seed accordingly.

No reason to give the 3-seed an advantage by getting the best group of 5 team rather than a better at-large team.

I just want to limit the committees influence as much as possible

I'd prefer a return to the old BCS formula if we are going to seed it that way

They would still have to seed the top 5 among the conference champions, and select and seed the two at-large. So they are seeding the other 7 spots to some degree.

No reason the BCS couldn't do that just the same though.

Top 5 are conference champs, then 6-8 is based on a series of tiebreakers. First tiebreaker is record, second is conference champion, and third is BCS standings. WMU had a better record and won their conference. They may not be a hyped team or have elite five and four stars, but they play good defense, play good offense, win games including obscure games in Bumfrickistan, Michigan/Ohio on any given night of the week, and they cover even when Vegas has them going away.

But won't the Big 12 still play a round robin format? I thought according to NCAA rules, you can have a championship game in one of two ways:
1) Everyone plays everyone and then the top two teams play again
2) Split into divisions and everyone in a division plays everyone else in the division and then the two division winners play.

W Michigan would not be a 6

You punish a 1 seed by making them play a good team while rewarding a 3 seed.
