Disagree with this stance. If its their livelihood they should know all this stuff and if their is a question then officials can be approached for answers

I agree that, at least at majors, there should be a rules official with each group to make these calls, but that isn't the way it works right now.
Sure there is an official with each group but the player HAS to ask for the ruling .. If the rules official was asked and the exact same scenario played out then it would have been a non issue ..

Nope, they have officials with every group but the rules of golf say the player has to ask for clarification or it is assumed the player knows the situation
Then the player should get the benefit of the doubt on judgement calls.

Correct. They are their to give guidance, not enforce. It is up to the player to enforce.

I'm sorry, but that is in there for small local games, and playing by yourself ect....
There is absolutely no reason for a PGA tournament, or a Major, to put that on the players. They're more than able to handle these situations and they should

He took an illegal drop plain and simple

He dropped 20 inches behind his divot at the most. It could be 6 inches. Dq?
This is preposterous.

It's not on the players shoulders, if they have a question the official is there to answer

20 inches??? Nice objectivity

Yea, that's just dumb IMO, it's not the 1920's, stuff like this should be handled by the official on the spot, and/or someone watching video. Do that and this would never be an issue.
Also, seems like he just interpreted the rule a different way, but wasn't necessarily wrong

He's getting a 2 shot penalty. frick threeputt

A two shot penalty for dropping the ball less than a foot behind his original spot in order to avoid the divot?

Possibly they are reviewing the rule which is what is taking so long, but I'd guess the ramifications of their decision to DQ him or not is being discussed at length as well.

He's about to shoot a 57...
