Kansas City

Might be a small sample size, but I have several friends in KC who don't really like the NBA. They much prefer college. KU & Mizzou rule the world there.

But KC has supported the hell out of some bad franchises over the past 2 decades, so maybe it would work? I'm guessing not many figured OKC would be such a good NBA host 10 years ago.

This.

Mizzou/KU dominate because there's no competition basketball-wise. Put high quality hoops here night in and night out and folks will support the hell out of it.

As far as pro franchises, they have great support here for Sporting KC and the Royals. I'm sure a pro hoops team would quickly find a strong foothold.

I honestly wouldn't have bet on OKC being such a good NBA city. People are quick to say that it's only because of the Thunder's success but they sold out every game of the Hornets when they were here for 2 years and those teams didn't make the playoffs. And then the Thunder started off historically bad in 2008 (3-29), and the support was still sky high.

I'm sure KC fans would come out. Don't they support an MLS team well to boot?

Yup, I remember the NOOCH days (NewOrleansOklahomaCityHornets). You never know how an area will embrace a team. That's why I laugh when some insinuate San Antonio wouldn't support an NFL team, even though we sold out games for the Saints while y'all were supporting the Hornets.

Yup, Sporting KC. They just won the MLS Cup, actually.

KC is one of my favorite cities in America. We go there every summer for a long weekend and stay in the Plaza area and catch Royals games. I really hope the Royals and/or Chiefs can turn the corner. Those fans deserve it.

Yeah half of my family is from there so I like the Royals and Chiefs. Actually stayed at the plaza myself last time. Couldn't live up there permanently though. Too much WT.

I was going to make a (somewhat troll) thread about this but then decided to leave it be. The OKC support thing bugs me because they never went through bad stages after the excitement of having a team wore off. It really isn't that hard to be a fan we you all of sudden have the best young roster just fall in your lap.

edit: no doubt the fan support has been great but i reserving full judgement until the post Durant years.

Dude, they had 2 years of mediocre Hornets play and 1 year of horrific Thunder play and yet the arena was rocking every night.

No one knew Westbrook, Ibaka, and Harden would turn out as well as they did. Hell, they barely made the playoffs in year 2 as the 8th seed and lost in the first round. That's 4 straight years of mediocre at best basketball in OKC with not a second of support lacking.

Chiefs had the corner all but turned this last year until they fricked it up historically against Indy

Dude that wasn't really their fault. Every key player on both sides of the ball got hurt.

The Thunder are the big fish in a small pond though. They can be viewed as the professional sports franchise of the state. Kansas City obviously already has the Chiefs and Royals.

I'm not ruling out KC as supporting a NBA franchise, I just think there's good reason to look at a small market location like OKC as a good bet if you only care about attendance and not adding another major media market. New Orleans IMO was never a perfect location for a NBA franchise because its a small city that is obsessed with the Saints. With 40 odd home games a year that's a lot of tickets to sell. We'll see in the long term, I'm guessing I'll get some NO hate for saying that.

Alex Smith missed Cyrus Gray on a wide open wheel route that would have been 6. Make that gimme play, and the Chiefs win.

They had shite luck, though.

I doesn't help that they aren't that big of basketball city in the first place. Having a guy like AD is going to really help, but that crowd I saw last night was depressing.

Memphis is one of the smallest markets in the league, but it is a basketball crazed city. It would be a good argument to why I think big college basketball cities could translate well to good NBA cities. The Tigers have always been packing the arena's there, so the transition has been easy. Ultimately it comes down to putting a good product on the floor.

Is it just me, or has the NBA knowledge/discussion on this board been much, much better recently?

Seems like we've had lots of good and logical discussions compared to stuff in the past.

I wonder where the Bucks will end up? Probably Seattle.

Yeah Grizz and Pels fans should pray for Seattle and KC to get teams. Especially if the Bucks move, those 2 teams would be headed East.

This needs to happen but no more expansion otherwise. I am good with no conferences.
