I don't understand, Notre Dame needs to join the Big 10

but they want to wait to see what the Big 10 does first. That is the natural fit for them.
Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick says the possible expansion of the Big Ten could create changes in major college football that force the Fighting Irish to give up their football independence.
The Big Ten and Pac-10 have both said they are exploring the possibility of adding schools.
Swarbrick says that looming realignment changes could be "relatively small ... or they could be seismic."
While Notre Dame prefers to remain independent in football, Swarbrick says, he and university president Rev. John Jenkins will evaluate whatever changes occur and assess how they effect the Fighting Irish.
Swarbrick told reporters Tuesday morning: "You can each come up with a scenario that would force our hand."

When NBC gets tired of showing every game of a 6-6 team's season year after year, then Notre Dame will finally join a conference. Too bad for them, as it may be the Big East by the time they get around to it.

It's inevitable. They will be in the Big 10, and soon. Northwestern makes more tv money than Notre Dame does.

I think they'll join the Big East (big fish in a small pond), which could possibly bring back BCU. They could demand to retain their NBC contract for home BE games, and the conference would no doubt capitulate.

Every Big Ten teams gets bowl money from multiple bowls. Notre Dame gets bowl money once every few years from some lowly bowl.
The Big Ten Network contract is worth more to each team than Notre Dame's contract with NBC.

I could see that. I live in Florida and have the Big 10 Network. As much as NBC pays to Notre Dame, it's kinda hard to match the revenue of a 24/7 cable network.

They really do need to join the Big Ten. It makes sense in EVERY way possible. ND already plays Michigan, Michigan St, Purdue and Penn St every year. Why not just make the full time jump? Its really too easy!!

What happens if USC goes on probabtion and can't be on TV. Does NBC still air the USC v ND game?

That's why I wish the SEC got a real network and not that syndicated package that does not have national distribution. I think the SEC should have made a deal with CBS and made CBS college sports the cable partner for the SEC. Put one game a week on ESPN for football and one on CBS network and put the other SEC games on CBS College Sports and have spillover channels like the BTN has. For college keep the current CBS Network and ESPN package but put the rest of the games on CBS college sports like the big ten does with the BTN.

one of the reasons why the TV ban is a thing of the past. ND would throw a fit if they cant televise that game

That will probably be the plan... they'd like to arrange it so they only play once/year... it would be pretty similar to Alabama/Auburn here

I would think because it's the Big Ten's biggest rivalry game that they would want to make it an annual game like LSU v. Florida but also keep them in different divisions so they have the possibility of a rematch (i.e. - more $$$) in the Big Ten Championship Game.

A few years ago, this arrangement would never work. But with Wisky and IA being consistently good, and M*ch*g*n continuing to suck donkey balls, this has merit. I had suggested once that the divisions not be geographic, and be reshuffled every few years, based on team strength. Numbers 1,4,5,8,9 on one side. That would get around the possible issue of one division being continuingly strong.
However they do it, the Big 10 needs to think outside the box on arranging things, championships, ect. And keep the Big 10 name. We can do it with 11, why not 12?

Already covered by an OSU fan but you're exactly wrong...
one of the big objections of many big ten fans to 12 teams and two divisions is repeat matchups of rivalries that are intended to be once/year
