How do you screw up that bad? No one checked the powerpoints?

The pitch meeting, according to Steph's father Dell, who was present, kicked off with one Nike official accidentally addressing Stephen as "Steph-on," the moniker, of course, of Steve Urkel's alter ego in Family Matters. "I heard some people pronounce his name wrong before," says Dell Curry. "I wasn't surprised. I was surprised that I didn't get a correction."

It got worse from there. A PowerPoint slide featured Kevin Durant's name, presumably left on by accident, presumably residue from repurposed materials. "I stopped paying attention after that," Dell says. Though Dell resolved to "keep a poker face," throughout the entirety of the pitch, the decision to leave Nike was in the works.

Those things should have been reviewed at multiple levels. Inexcusable.

Copying and pasting has bit me in the arse multiple times on projects work plans, and that's usually after a couple of rounds of proofreadings, I'll forget to change like a date or project name in one spot. shite happens

It is a bit perplexing, but losing Curry wasn't a big deal in 2013. Coming into that meeting Curry had a per of 19.4, 21.2, and 21.3 in the previous 3 seasons and was already 25 years old with 4 seasons under his belt. The fact that he would go on to have a per of 24.1, 28.0, and 31.9 in the next three seasons is unprecedented as far as career arcs are concerned.
Additionally, Nike basically gets who they want when it comes to basketball players. I doubt they though there was a chance in hell they'd lose Curry, even with the lackluster pitch.

Facebook has been telling me he didn't sign with Nike because of religious reasons. Something about a shoe and bible verse.

addressing Stephen as "Steph-on,"
I know a guy who says Stephon....drives me nuts. I don't want to be the guy who corrects someone's words, so I try to incorporate his actual name as much as I can so that maybe he'll hear it.

Exactly, there was no way to know he would blow up like that. I always wondered how they could throw tens to hundreds of millions at player after player, but I guess this explains it:

According to Forbes, Nike accounted for 95.5 percent of the basketball sneaker market in 2014.

It's like Seth Greenberg offering Curry a walk-on spot at VaTech all over again.
At the very least, you could tell that the Warriors were on an ascent by 2013.

Steph definitely wasn't as big of a deal back then, but still. If Nike thought he was good enough to pitch him a deal, they could've at least gotten their shite together for the presentation.

Mispronouncing his name is one thing. But this is god awful. I mean anyone can make mistakes but Jesus man. That shite should cause a demotion at the very least. You make a mistake you pay the consequences.

2 things. Know the name of who you are taking to, and make sure your PPT slides are accurate. How hard is that.

It can get pretty aggravating with how often Stephen gets pronounced as "Steph-on". Everytime it happens I want to make a smartass response asking if I sound French.
To screw it up that badly with a professional athlete is mind boggling.
