How fast could an F1 or Indy Car go on the Talladega oval?

Closed course, no worry about spectators, flat out on the full tri-oval.

Could a driver even handle the g-forces and speed?

Not sure they could handle the speed, I could see the nose of the car lifting up during the race.

AJ Foyt still holds the closed course speed record for talledega @ 217mph, from 1974. Problem is w/ the track's high banking, an open wheel car needs a ton of Downforce to not take off like an airplane.

For reference, Rusty Wallace set the stock car record @ 216 w/o a restrictor plate in 2004.

How does banking affect downforce? The volume of air around the car is the same no matter the angle of the car itself, right?

I only say this because a stock car keeps downforce through the banking, it's when they are around another car that they get suction to pull them off course.

I would think that an F1 car by itself on a superspeedway could hum around at 230+, no problem.

The banking definitely creates downforce.

If they dropped the back wing and tuned the gearbox for ovals I see no problem with an f1 car doing 250 or 260.

Depends on how much downforce was applied to try to keep the car forced down.

This would obviously slow the car down.

However the slightest bobble would send the car airborne.

If they get to 220mph then they will also set the MPG record too.

Would it be different from when Indy was turned fully up at Texas and the drivers were passing out from the g force? Pretty sure they were pushing 240 there

Remember F1 isn't necessarily built for flat out speed on their longest straights they are topping out around 220 this year.

Tim Richmond took a lap at 240 mph at a test track up in Ohio, but the car wasn't race-legal.

A. J. Foyt drove an experimental Olds Aerotech at 267 mph, if memory serves.

I misspoke, I was thinking G-Force not downforce. When the old Champ cars ran higher powered turbos @ Texas they had to cancel a race due to drivers getting dizzy and light headed, and that's only 24 degrees of banking compared to 32 @ Dega.

Cool old article about Foyt's record ...

AJ Foyt Speed Record Article
quote:

Foyt said he believed a dedicated effort could produce speeds of 240-245mph on the giant Alabama track

quote:

I got in trouble and almost ran into the fence in turn 2. When you're running over 200mph that track is pretty narrow. I ran a little wing and a legal motor that would've passed inspection @ Indianapolis"

AJ is a pretty bad arse dude. Him and Mario Andretti would go do these close course tests just to set the top speeds @ tracks for dick measuring purposes. Sadly you don't see giant stars of Motorsport doing awesome stuff like this these days, all we get are twitter beefs now. Smh
