So, 163 games.

That's not how this works.

The Mets and Dodgers. They swept the season series with the Mets and only dropped 1 game to the Dodgers.

Gotcha. But, I think the Mets are clearly playing their best baseball right now, so when you caught them this year is key. When the cubs played them out there, the Mets couldn't score a run to save their lives.

I think in my OP I really meant to say best of 3--have no idea why I said 5. A 3 game wild card round would make more sense and make it a better media draw as well.

I think the overarching problem that I don't like is how two of the best teams are playing to just get in. That doesn't make much sense to me.

Thats the way it is in the NFL, and I'm fine with that. Just reseed it after the WC games.

You don't think that the Pirates and Cubs should be hosting playoff series and not playing to get in? They literally have the #2 and #3 records in baseball. And they're "wild cards". That is what I don't like.

It shouldn't be just one game to decides who advances between the 2nd and 3rd best records in all of baseball.

Well, the pirates likely will be hosting a playoff game. It does suck for the cubs, but if you determine wild card/non-wild card solely by records, you devalue winning the division. But that's something that's definitely debatable.

For the record, my stance is the same for the NFL.

In a 162 game MLB season, I think winning the division has it's merits and should grant a playoff berth, but I also think that the playoffs should be reseeded prior to the playoffs beginning.

I guess I feel like a 95 win wild card team is more impressive than an 88 win division winner.

We're pretty much in agreement then. I just think you reseed after the wild card games, to give the division winner the pass and home field in NLDS.

If I'm a cardinals fan, I'd feel the same way. They have to face the second or third best team in the league in the NLDS. That's shitty all around.

two 8-team divisions in each league

I'd love to see that.

I wish that assclown Selig had left the Astros in the NL. Then we could just go to that right now, except that there would be 7 teams per division in the AL.

Kind of out there, but I've said many times that it should be a three game series with the first two at the home team and game three the very next day at the the other team's venue.
