How can we reconcile the fact that 3 of the 5 conf. championships meant nothing?

SEC - Bama was locked in regardless
BIG10 - Ohio State was locked in regardless, not even playing in the game
BIG12 - both teams with zero playoff consideration regardless
PAC12 - Washington would be out with a loss
ACC - I think Clemson was likely out with a loss
You can argue about how many teams deserve to be in but I think this is the crux of the entire issue with the current system. The regular season has already been devalued because the committee will always be subjective and conference championships for the most part mean nothing.

They're not mini-tournaments that automatically qualify a team. Just get that out of your head now and you will come to accept what is happening with the playoff.

The only part that bothers me is that Ohio State benefited from PSU beating MSU and winning the division.
If MSU beat PSU, Ohio State could have been sitting at home with a loss to Wisconsin in the Big 10 championship. They benefited from not winning their conference and taking on the risk of the conference championship.
That is a flaw in the current system.

This isn't the first year where a team could've lost the conference championship game and still played for an NC.

I don't think winning a conference should be a requirement to get in, but I think winning one should guarantee you're in.

They meant something. Just not enough. Penn state wasn't best team in big 10 and Oklahoma was clearly the weakest champ

A conference championship s a worthy accomplishment in and of itself, it's not supposed to merely be a playoff qualifier. I fricking hate people that think like you.

Since only 4 teams make it, you will always have at least 1 league as not meaning anything.
