How badly does College Basketball need a change?

Sitting here flipping back & forth between UVA/Cuse and Baylor/Texas (goodbye Rick). It's a perfect example of something many have stated all season long. The CBB game itself is just plain bad. Yes, UVA plays great defense but the offensive execution is just terrible for most teams across the nation. The PPG is at its lowest since the early 1950's.

And I have no idea what the solution is. I know the NIT will be experimenting with the 30 second shot clock and that should help points totals at least a bit. What else? Widen the lane? Extend the arc under the basket? It's just incredibly frustrating for a game that has such an amazing atmosphere (not Texas of course but others).

I can't watch this stuff. Can't even get into watching LSU play.

Watching these offenses for these teams is pitiful. It's so chaotic. It's just looks like everyone running around full speed not knowing what their doing and then jacking up a shitty contested 3 pointer.

It's getting a change next year.

Shot clock down to 30 and arc extended to 4 feet.

Trial run of both during this years NIT, and then into effect next season.

It goes against conventional wisdom, but the difference in quality of play between college basketball and the NBA these days is enormous, seemingly more so than college football and the NFL.

I wonder if it has to do with the distribution of talent being more spread around in college basketball vs. college football (save for the 5 of the top 10 recruits who sign with Kentucky each year).

raise age limit in NBA
The best guys are in the NBA.

allow coaches more practice time, say in the summer without having to go to Asia and Europe.

You do see solid all around play from mid-majors with lots of seniors, because while they do not have the size, speed or athleticism of the big5, they actually know the game by the time they are 22.

if you saw Northern Iowa vs Wichita State the other day, you would have no complaints.

Some of it is good to watch. You're stuck watching Rick Barnes squander away talent every game so it's probably not very exciting for you.

Just have a couple if drinks and it gets better.

A shorter shot clock, wider lane, and bigger restricted zone would be a good start.

Majority of it is bad, especially in comparison to what is going on in the NBA nowadays.

I definitely agree, which is why I've become much more of an NBA fan over the last five years. Some of the games are still exciting to watch though and college basketball always gets better with the Conference and NCAA tournaments.

Interesting that you mention this. I am linking an article from the NY Times last week wherein Iona's head coach, Tim Cluess addresses this issue.

30 second shot clock would be nice and raising NBA age minimum to 21 would be nice.

I still love it though and would take it over NBA any day.

I also agree with the point about Wichita and UNI. Teams with lots of seniors are great to watch

As others have said you need a 30 second shot clock and eliminate the 3 point shotI. I don't think you need to widen the lane or change the arc. I don't think that will make as much as a difference as a 30 second shot clock and getting rid of the 3 point shot.

If you take away the 3 point shot you make players work toward the basket more and teams won't foul as much. You would still have defense but you won't have the muggings you have now.

And also zone defense kills college basketball. It slows the game way down and no one knows how to attack it.

They need to run zone like a NBA team has to run zone.

The standing the biggest guy under the rim for 35 seconds tactic in CBB is what makes them so damn frustrating to watch.

Yes it is, the trial run during the NIT is followed by a vote in May...that vote is widely expected to pass with ease, putting it into effect next season.

Carson I'm with you, love college hoops watch it a ton, haven't watched an NBA game in years and never will it ranks behind tennis for me.
