Baseball reference Boxscore

Bonus points to whoever can guess who started for the Astros without looking

I was in Houston at the time visiting my dad's family. I can not recall there ever being so much buzz for a single regular season game.

We watched the game from my uncle's country club after we had gotten done golfing and there were so many people there with eyes glued on the TV the entire game. I am not even an Astros fan and wasn't at the time but I was just as into it as everyone else.

Only pic I can find from the game:

Baseball Reference is wrong. That game took place July 29th, 2005.

They only had like 6 or 7 pitchers start games for them that year and I'm guessing it's not Pettitte Oswalt or Clemens so that narrows it down quite a bit

I'll go with Backe. I don't remember though

That atmosphere was rocking. I remember watching Brownie and Jimmy on good old FS

I never understood why it was such a big deal - he played for the Astros for half a season yet the fans treated his coming back to Houston as if he was like Pujols and the Cardinals and played for the team for 10 years and won titles with him

You had to live that run that he had and that team had in person to understand. He was so dominant, I've never seen a position player put a team on his back like that for a stretch and playoff run before or since. And Houston fans hate the taking more money in New York type thing so it hit home. We probably took it too seriously but whatever, I still hear fans speculate what if he had resigned.

It was certainly a bit silly but You had websites donating money to the cause. Honestly we should have been more upset with administration

Not resigning Jeff Kent may have hurt us worse the next year.

There was a guy selling BELTRAN $UCKS tshirts outside the park when the Mets came to town. I may still have mine somewhere.

Yeah I can't remember what ended up being the difference with Beltran, I want to say it was maybe like two mil a year and a no trade clause. I mean come on, that team's window was closing fast. They had to resign one of Kent or Beltran to have a legit shot in 05 honestly. I second what prom said about how I can't believe they won the pennant.

How the 2004 team didn't make the World Series but the 2005 team did is a complete mystery to me.

That mystery is easily solved when you pay attention to just how good that 2004 Cardinals team was, yeah the Red Sox's embarrassed us but they ha fall the momentum from overcoming the 3-0 deficit vs the Yankees. Talk to anyone involved in baseball and they will tell you that 04 team is the best team we have had since the 80s
