NFL coaches are conservative because a boneheaded (unsuccessful) gamble and they lose their jobs, or at the very least are the butt of every joke for the next week.
An NFL coach can make the right decision and get blamed and potentially fired for it. This quote sums up the NFL:

"It is better to make the popular wrong decision, than the unpopular right one"

For example, years ago Belichick went for a 4th down in his own territory against Manning and the colts, and he got absolutely roasted for it. Well, after research was done by a stat junky, it turns out Bill actually made the right play in terms of giving the Patriots the best chance to win

In the interview I linked on the last page he talked about one of the things he hears from college coaches at least is that the worry is less about their own job, but more about what would happen to his assistants if they were fired.

He went on to talk about how a Big 12 offensive coordinator met with him and said he was going all in on what Kelley does. He tried to go back and convince his HC to do it, but he said no. That OC became a HC somewhere and suddenly wasn't so in to running what Kelley does.

I played for Coach Kelley and I'd run through a wall for him.
