Ferentz is going to be the first billionaire college coach this season.

Ferentz is on his last contract. He's signed on through 2020. He'll be 65 and it'll be his 21st season at Iowa. If he can keep momentum until then he'll retire after that. If Iowa sinks back to where Iowa was the last few season then he'll get fired. He's done a good job reinventing himself over the offseason in ways that most coaches with his tenure don't, but the Iowa fanbase was calling for his head 2 years ago. Most thought (and we're hoping) this would be his last season. He's been able to save his job for now, but the Iowa fanbase will be quick to remember if he has another losing season.

Didn't think this needed to be pointed out.

Hayden Fry ring a bell? Ferentz can't hold Fry's jock. The Big Ten ran through Iowa City in the 80's. Ferentz hasn't won a single outright conference championship.

Which is crazy because he was the hottest name in the NFL for a couple of years.

10 years ago. His last real shot an NFL HC gig was probably after 2009, and even by then he was probably a 3rd rate candidate.

2 years ago he was coming off a 4-8 season, he had lost the team, and players were getting arrested left and right. The program was a dumpster fire.

The only reason he's still the coach at Iowa today is because of boosters old enough to remember the 60's and 70's before Hayden Fry coached Iowa. They're scared of going back to that so they're content with a bunch of mediocre seasons and a couple losing season as long as they get that once or twice a decade BCS bowl caliber season.
