And Stovall still ran circles around Baker as a football player.

The runner-up to Baker in the voting that year.

Yeah he sounds better than Baker.

But Baker wasn't some bum... He was exactly what Heisman voters were still looking for in that day.

The all-around player. Do everything. A great college player but not an NFL player.

They thought best player in America meant decathlete.

It took awhile before it became pure running backs and then pure QBs.

I think George Rodgers is considered the worst by most talking heads.

Disagree.

He had a great 1980 season. Arguable that Hugh Green may have deserved it more, but the pro-Rogers' argument is just as valid. Plus (fair or not) defensive players just don't win the Heisman Trophy.

There certainly wasn't another offensive player any more deserving than Rogers.

And why is this a knock against him? Herschel Walker got a lot of yards because he got a lot of carries, and many SEC fans consider him the greatest running back in the history of the conference.

He was Getting tons of carries in games that were basically decided to pad stats imo. The award is for most outstanding player, I said he should have been 2nd for crying out loud, at worst 3rd, and i also said i don;t really have a problem with him winning that's not really a knock

As for Walker, it was a different time and game, you'd had to see him play but his Fr year he avg 5.9 ypc that was 14th in the country, in 2015 that gets you 54th. Henry was 73rd

quote:

Henry carried the ball 395 times.

OJ Simpson during his Heisman season carried the ball 383 times and sportswriters and future NFl employers complained to the USC coaches that they were ruining this RB.

There is zero proof more carries in college hurt or shorten pro careers for RBs. Tony Dorsett hyad 1163 carries in college, he went first overall and had a great career. Tomlinson had close to 1000 careers. What shortens careers is injuries. Father time always wins.

No doubt that NFl scouts were right in saying Saban uses up running backs...So be weary of drafting so much tread on a plowhorse with a great o- line

Leonard Fournette had more carries in college than Derrick Henry.

Ezekiel Elliot had 8 fewer carries

Adrian Peterson had 145 more carries in college than Derrick Henry. Run along now, but not too fast twinkle toes, wouldn't want you to hurt yourself

Dalvin Cook, Christian McCaffrey, and Leonard Fournette all have far more career touches than Henry. Yet all may be 1st round picks so obviously NFL teams don't care that much.

As seen last season, that tread may already be wearing down

oh for frick sake, the human body is not a set of radial tires with X number of miles on it. Fournette sprained his ankle in practice that can happen to anyone regardless of the number of carries. I could sit here all day an throw out guys that had even more carries and did just fine in the pros. Of the top 5 rushers in the NFL last year, Elliot had 592, the other 4 all had more college carries than Fournette.

Some time in the '80s I saw the great Dan Jenkins ("The only thing more boring than Track... is Field.") on TV and he said that Griffin won twice when he shouldn't have won at all.
