I'm sure we're all familiar with the story of how he invested his own $50m in a new video game company that failed. What I have never seen is why he did this. Didn't he have advisers, attorneys/accountants etc to say this is not a good idea. shite didn't his wife say hell no are you nuts.

I mean dude works his whole life, hits the baseball lottery in the process and then blows it all on starting a freaking video game company!

WTF....this has to be one of the worst financial moves of any athlete I've ever heard of.

Sets up generations of his family and he literally pissed it away.

Has he ever addressed this?

It's up there. Sadly there is no shortage of ridiculous investments made by athletes.

He was an avid gamer all during his playing days. Thought that he could start and run a company after retiring. Invested tons of his own money and got his state to foolishly invest even more. In the end, he did not know what he was doing and ended up blowing through all of the money in no time. They did have one release, a game which was actually pretty much 75% done when they purchased it and altered it to fit the world narrative which they were creating. It was actually not bad, but did not move that many units. He dreamed big, so I give him credit, but what the hell was the state doing investing that much money in a video game company?

That state still owns the ip too and is just sitting on it. They have no reason not to sell it off but they don't know what they are doing.

How much money does it cost to develop a video game??? Schilling invested $50MM, the Rhode Island EDC guaranteed a $75MM loan.

From another article:

quote:

The company had an asset base of $21.7 million dollars and liabilities of $150 million to the State of Rhode Island and more than 1,000 investors.

Seriously, WTF?

And yet he couldn't keep his mouth shut to hang on to his $2.5M a year job at ESPN

He shouldn't have said what his salary was, just makes him look even stupider.

It's an expensive business that's hard to turn a profit and even worse if you don't know what you are doing.

Is it? I mean how many games were they developing?

Skyrim cost $92MM for development, marketing, and manufacturing. These dumbasses lost nearly twice that.

Didn't the state government frick him over regarding some of that money? I remember reading somewhere the state promised X dollars if his company created Y jobs, and he expanded faster that originally planned in order to get the state funds.

Or is my memory totally fricked?

The problem was that it cost so much to make that they just couldn't recover
