Has Bama's success this year been overhyped?

Here's a ringer article talking about why their success might be overinflated due to this year's SEC LINK
quote:
Max Browne, Stephen Johnson, Josh Dobbs, Trevor Knight, Danny Etling, Nick Fitzgerald, Jeremy Johnson, and Austin Appleby?—?none of whom rank in the top 50 nationally in passing yards per game
quote:
Against LSU, their best opponent by advanced metrics, they faced a Purdue transfer at quarterback; in their conference championship game, they faced another, worse Purdue transfer at quarterback. Even Big Ten teams weren’t lucky enough to face two different Boilermaker starting QBs this year.

I don't recall the SEC being so down like it was this season as well

Alabama has the best record and the highest SOS in the country.

The SEC being down is like most other conferences normal year. While it was down, Alabama has scored, what, 13-14 non offensive TDs? I mean that defense is absolutely insane.

If anything it's been underhyped

Maybe if they narrowly eeked by everyone. Outside of OM & LSU, they destroyed Power 5 opponents by 29 ppg (27 ppg vs entire schedule).
The Bucks narrowly beat a 3-win team by a whole point. They also struggled against Indiana, had three other wins by one score, plus a loss. Clemson struggled against a lot of teams including Troy who was absolutely robbed and NC State who couldn't make a simple field goal. Washington played a bad schedule and was dominated by a team Bama beat by 46 with a freshman backup QB.
We can make any of the CFP teams look pedestrian in a vacuum.

The QBs from Ole Miss and Arkansas are both very good, but a lot of the QBs you listed wouldn't be in the top 50 for passing yards just because of the offense they run. I think Fitzgerald is a freshman and he was playing much better late in the season when Alabama played him.

And they were up by 18 over Ole Miss with 3 minutes left in the game.

It's somewhat basic football. If one team can't move the ball at all that teams defense will slowly begin giving up field position. Look at OSU in the first half against Michigan as they gained 5-7 yards a drive most of the first half.
There are no teams outside Bama in the SEC this year who have both offense and defense. All 4 playoff teams have that.
Bama may still win out but when their defense isn't starting inside the opponents 20 every drive they may nit be able to play quite as aggressively etc.
Or Bama may be that good. Best part is we get to see

But how do we determine that? Is it the perceived idea that the SEC is better than everyone therefore they have a high SOS? I'm not being a smart arse, I'm actually asking.

Etling isn't that horrible but I agree Bama's success has been overhyped this year.

The old bcs SOS formula:
x = opponents' winning percentage
y = opponents' opponents' winning percentage
SOS = (2x+y)/3
x = opponents' winning percentage
y = opponents' opponents' winning percentage
SOS = (2x+y)/3

SEC QB's that Bama has faced are not as terrible as they're portrayed. The whole "SEC always has bad qb's" is a Colin Cowherd meme.
The problem with the SEC as the year progressed was injuries.
SEC Qb's Bama has faced: Chad Kelly, Trevor Knight, Austin Allen, Josh Dobbs, Danny Etling, Nick Fitzgerald. While maybe not the best group in the country it's hardly chopped liver. And they played teams such as Ole Miss and A&M at their peak, before injuries.
Now, they have not faced an offense as mechanically sound and well-timed as UW. And they certainly haven't seen a QB like Watson all year, but that should be expected when you enter the playoff. Neither of their opponents has seen a defense anywhere close to them either. It's unchartered waters for all 4 teams at that point.

No. Other than LSU, it's been total domination.

It definitely is being underhyped. Two more wins, and this will be the greatest Alabama team of all time.

It's weird, the computers have the SEC West as the top division in CFB..
And the SEC East as the worst division in CFB.
1. SEC West
8. AAC West
9. Big12
10. SEC East
SEC QB play has fallen off a cliff.
That's the luxury Bama has right now. The benefit of the doubt from their own division (mostly because of them) with the reality of playing some truly awful East teams.
