Baseball is weird. I enjoy it but I can't watch a game not involving my team from start to finish. Even playoffs its very rare I do.more than casual check in until like 7th.
Majority of people I know are same. If not there live its hard to watch someone else's team

id say a mix of attendance and ratings is the best way. Baseball is a local sport where the NBA regular season has more nation appeal.

It's the little nuances of the game of baseball that make it so fun to watch. Obviously the rest of the country disagrees with you.

And it pretty much backs up with everyone knows about CBB. It's popularity has taken a huge hit.
In 1989, it ranked 3rd, with 10% of people saying it was their favorite sport.

College football and the NFL are the only sports I watch on a regular basis. I watch golf if it's a Major tournament, and I love LSU baseball because the Tigers have owned the sport for the past 20 years or so.
I think MLB has a problem with an older demographic, so can they sustain their #2 ranking? I predict that college football will pass them up, if they haven't already done so.
Ato racing? The NBA? The NHL? Those sports all suck.

What i find awesome about baseball is that the game has largely stayed the same over the last hundred years.

I think that the one and done rule has a lot to do with that.
These days people gravitate towards (or against...) individuals, their perceived personalities, and their "stories"; in college basketball you don't have as much of that anymore because the players aren't there as long to develop their story lines.

Two NBA games last year did better than the final World Series game. Game 6 & Game 7 (which was the 2nd most watched NBA since '98)
In 2011 the World Series had some of it's lowest ratings through 5 games. Then games 6 & 7 gave the World Series better ratings than the Final 4, BCS, and beat the NFL head to head, Sunday NBC (Saints/Colts).
I would say that in both cases those were outliners.
The NBA playoffs for the most part aren't a ratings sucess when compared to NFL/MLB. Most NBA playoff games have less than 5 million viewers. The Western conference Finals last year broke 5 million once.
Hawks/Pacers round 1 didn't break 200K viewers 3 different times. That's less than what college baseball on ESPNU gets. NHL Stanley Cup Game 6 had 8.2 million viewers only 9 NBA games beat that.

Any game 6/7 will pull in a casual fan which is why baseball and football would love every series to go 6 or 7 games

The NFL is the only ubiquitous American sport. Everything else is a niche interest, including CFB.
Although it's amusing to see MLB as the #2 sport, as someone starts an OMG BASEBALL IS DEAD thread on here every 1.3 days.
