The committee announces the four playoff teams. Let's say that tomorrow they are
1 Alabama
2 Clemson
3 Ohio State
4 Washington

All four teams join the broadcast via satellite from their campuses. Cut to Tuscaloosa. Since Bama is the #1 team, they get to pick one of the following:
a) their opponent
b) their game location (this year it's Atlanta and Glendale)
c) defer and let #2 pick

I'd guess Bama chooses to go to Atlanta. Cut to Clemson, who then gets to pick from the same 3: opponent, location, or pass. Does Clemson pick Bama/Atlanta, or do they pick Glendale and then let Ohio State pick next?

I know, I know...this is a great idea. No need to reward me with a cascade of upvotes.

Alabama would pick Atlanta, then Clemson would pick Penn State so Alabama would be stuck playing Washington... easy path for Bama.

Yeah but it makes it sort of WWE too. Would a team EVER pick their opponent and not a location? What if there were two teams from the same conference, would Bama ever say "bring on Auburn?"

Why would any team defer?

Why would any team pick a location if an opponent was still available? That's more important than where you play.

I don't know. But I think they should be allowed to do so if that's what they want to do. Sort of like in football, you're allowed to botch the coin toss and kick off to start both halves.

Picking your opponent is automatic bulletin board material for the opponent. Maybe a team doesn't want to do that. Let's say UCLA is #1, and Pasadena happens to be one of the semifinal sites. Or LSU/NOLA, OU/Dallas, Miami/Miami, etc...if a team views the field to be pretty equal, picking a home game or back yard game can be an advantageous pick.

In today's example, let's say Alabama views all three teams to be equally good and picks Atlanta. Clemson definitely picks Glendale because nobody's gonna pick Bama. Now it's Ohio State's turn. However they spin it, OSU is picking their opponent, so when they pick Glendale, they're saying they have a better chance of beating Clemson then they do Bama. Or does OSU defer and make Washington pick, knowing that this will result in them having to play Bama?

Basically, this process guarantees that somebody is going to have to call out an opponent. I'd like to see that happen.
