"Extreme athlete and adventurer Dean Potter is dead after a failed attempt at wingsuit flight from Yosemite’s Taft Point. Potter held the speed climbing record for The Nose at El Capitan—one of climbing’s signature routes—three separate times, though his notoriety may stem from his more controversial acts, including a prolific career in BASE jumping and slacklining."

Was going to try to throw a pun out there, but they're all likely covered already in the deadspin comments section.

My money is on Alex Honnold being the next to bite it. Only a matter of time.

He died an exciting death, too. At least he didn't bring his poor dog this time.

He flew into a mountain and he wasn't in a plane. Just how long do you think he lasted?

It depends on things like angle of impact and level of brain trauma. I'm not saying he lived for 2 days.

I'm trying to figure out if I'm ok with the whole "died doing what he loves" thing.

Is he any less dead? Dude was 43. If someone told me I was going to die watching a Packer game at age 43, I wouldn't really be ok with that and I don't think people would use that statement in regards to my death.

The guy liked doing stuff that's really dangerous...and the fact that he risked his life like that so often is really the only reason he was famous.

Kinda weird that the Deadspin article doesn't say what happened that killed both of them.

Ya, I know he jumped off a high place and hit the ground really hard, but what went wrong or what was he attempting to do, etc.?

Two dudes died...maybe it was a tandem wingsuit that just didn't work? Did he have a blowout on one of his wings? Did he not realize he was as low as he was? Need the info.

There is a really interesting documentary which chronicles Potter, his cohorts and the history of climbing out in Yosemite. Crazy & brave. Discovery Channel - very similar in tone to Dogtown and Z- Boys. Highly recommend.

Read up on it. No one knows exactly what happened, people heard a sound but were not sure what it was from.

They were travelling a route using wingsuits and eventually took a path through a rocky area that is quite dangerous, most people who fly through Yosemite don't use that route due to the danger involved.

quote:

"Potter and Hunt had been attempting to fly along terrain that required them to clear a notch in a rocky ridgeline. "It's kind of a trickier flight to go through this notch," Gauthier says. On Sunday morning, a state police helicopter was able to spot both bodies from the air. No parachutes had been deployed. Two rangers were then airlifted to the site to perform the recovery."
