quick cliffnotes:

Angels batter hit a line drive to the gap that got wedged under the cushion at the wall. Rangers outfielder struggles a little bit to grab it but at no point turns around or puts his arms up in the air to signal that it isn't playable. He throws the ball in and the runner is tagged out at 3rd trying to stretch it out to a triple. Angels call for a review and want it ruled a ground rule double

umpires come back from review and send the runner to second, Banister immediately runs out and immediately gets ejected. Next batter (mike trout) hits game tying triple

I was under the impression that the fielder had to put his arms up in the air to make it unplayable/ ground rule double and that playing it would basically void that

so, am I thinking of college rules? why was he sent back to second instead of being called out at 3rd?

I think it's a judgement call for the umps.

I always thought it was on the fielder.

Only other instance I can think of is a college game though.

Bannister said on the replay it showed the ball was still spinning so it's not likely it was wedged. Don't know how the umps missed that. Also. Moreland was ejected for arguing balls and strikes again when it was the HP umpire baiting Moreland. I hate the arrogance of umpires.

it was in Texas

umps ruled out on the field and then overturned it after the angels review. Rangers had a fill in broadcaster for last nights game but he was just as confused as I was when it was overturned and Banister was tossed with the quickness. Umps had everyone on a very short leash last night, Mitch Moreland got tossed for the first time in his career

This year during ST, Astros hit one to center wall and Cespedes put his hands up, ump declared it live and Astros got a HR. Happened during the season somewhere else and it was ruled a double.

Still need to know the ground rules, but I would think that Bannister would know.

Here's the Rangers ground rules that are on their site LINK
quote:

Fair ball lodging in fence padding or in manually-operated scoreboard left field fence: Two Bases
Once it gets lodged in the fence, I believe the umps can decide to award the two bases, regardless of if the guy raises his arms. I'm sure their ground rules are more specific at the ballpark though.

VIDEO of the play and review from MLB.com (3min)

Looked to me like the ball's progress had stopped... but didn't look like it was wedged. Mazara briefly mishandled the ball but made no indication it was stuck in any way shape or form. Mishandling could've been due to the ball still spinning as some have suggested... but I can't tell.

I just don't see how the ground rule double ruling was justified.

agreed, especially considering it was ruled an out at 3rd on the field. I would understand if Mazara had put his hands up or hesitated and the runner had slowed down because of it but both of them went full speed the entire play.

Can't believe Joe West made the game about himself again. He never does that.

Seriously, can he just go away already?

You could argue that once the ball went in there and didn't come out that it was "lodged." Without the official ground rules of how him reaching down there to grab it affects whether the ball is dead or not, it's hard to say what the correct call should be.

Since this is Joe West, I tend to lean to the side that says it should've been a live ball.

The dude trotted into second, then changed his mind once he saw it was stuck and tried for third (clearly taking advantage of the situation). He should have stayed at 2nd if he just wanted a double, try for third and you take what you get. He was out. Should have been the end of the story. The Angels don't get the benefit of the doubt AFTER they tried to stretch it to third. They should be held accountable and not let them have their cake and eat it too. That's messed up.

And, I'm an astros fan here

he was a cock sucker last night. I did love that he was trying to get everyone out quickly after the rain delay and the Rangers still took their time

random question, did you go to any world series games in 2010 or 2011?

my buddy is a cubs fan, we booked flights on southwest into Dallas for Game 2 of the WS if it's Cubs@Rangers. wondering what the secondary market is for a world series game, we wouldn't give a shite where the tickets are.
