Yeah I deleted my post. I remembered that all wrong. Could have swore there was a player where that was the case

Ted Williams. Finished with 234 less homers than Hank but missed 4-5 seasons due to being a badass.

Will Clark was good, but by no means close to being the best.

1. Ted Williams

It's hard to argue against The Splendid Splinter.

.344 career BA, 521 HR, 2654 hits and the last man to hit over .400 in a season in 1941...all while missing nearly FIVE YEARS of playing time to go became a pilot and flight instructor in WWII and was recalled back into the military for Korea where he flew 37 combat missions.

Imagine missing three ENTIRE seasons in the middle half of the beginning of your career after you've already hit .406 (1943, 44, 45) and then most of the 52-53 seasons for Korea?

When guys like Don Mattingly, Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs, etc think you're the greatest hitter of all time, who am I to argue?

lol why the hell do people always mention Griffey? He's a HOF but even just the last 30 years there have been 10 better hitters:

Bonds
Manny
Pujols
Thomas
Trout
Cabrera
A-Rod
Mcgwire
Helton
Walker

McGwire was a lifetime .263 hitter with over 1500 Ks. I’ll pass.

Barry Bonds 2000 - 2004 was the GOAT, imo.

From 1989-2000, one of these is Mac’s walk total, one is his K’s

1212
1110

Which is which

I know he ended with more Ks than walks, so I assume 1212 is strikeout total. Definitely adds perspective when you compare his ratio to Bonds.

Any list of great all around hitters must include Ruth, Mays, Williams and Aaron near the top.

One I haven’t seen mentioned on here is Joe DiMaggio. Career .325 hitter with 361 home runs. He missed 3 years because of the war. He at least deserves a mention.

Good points. I still think Bonds is the greatest hitter of all time.

ETA

People dont want to not give him credit because of PEDs, but he also faced pitchers on PEDs. Ruth didn't face blacks or Latinos. Williams was out five years. Sucks for him, but he didn't play.

DiMaggio was a great player but doesn’t deserve to be be mentioned in this type of list

DiMaggio’s career home run total is pretty impressive when you factor in old Yankee Stadium not being a friendly park for right handed hitters. From 1937 until the renovation in ‘76, straightaway left was 402 and left center was 457. No telling what his home run totals would have been in the post-renovation dimensions and with additional 3 prime years lost to World War II.

Does anyone else respect and love Babe Ruth, but hate putting him above a couple of guys cause we think he had guys throwing him meatballs vs the evolution of the different breaking balls over the years? And also the fact that nobody on this board actually saw him play. It’s something to consider. I would never put him outside the top 5, but imagine Barry Bonds in the 30s....

To me, that’s actually a check in his favor considering 3 were early prime years and 2 were late prime. And he still hit 521 homers and 2,654 hits despite missing that amount of time.

Mays and Aaron are up there really high as all around hitters.

In fact, if we ignore the Babe’s pitching prowess the two best ALL around complete baseball players are Mays and Bonds

In his interviews for the Ken Burns Baseball documentary, Ted Williams himself says Willie Mays was probably the greatest all around player ever.
