Make that five... including Tulane... four of which will be bowl eligible.

I think articles that talk about population shift are partially right but don't paint a big picture.

The big problem right now is schools are not paying coaching staffs right now. I'd love to see what the top SEC programs coaching staff budget versus the B1G.

And tied into that, the B1G is printing money and does equal revenue sharing. So what incentive is there for Indiana to pay the cash to build a program when they collect the same check as Ohio State?

Really its a multi-layered issue, there isn't one central cause.

Huge problem for the conference and it will only get worse with the addition of poverty Rutgers.

There is obviously short term value in the adds, but because no one knows if bundled cable pricing is going to remain there is obviously a risk here.

This article sums the whole issue up perfectly.

quote:

The superconference experiments failed because you can’t manufacture tradition, and tradition is the only thing college football has to offer. Without tradition, college football is just an NFL minor league. Big Ten football mainly consists on a week-to-week basis of games like Michigan versus Minnesota and Illinois versus Wisconsin. Those games have meaning to the fans in ways outsiders can’t grasp. The series have gone on for a century. They often have funny old trophies. Every game is lodged into a long historical narrative of cherished (or cursed) memory. Replacing those games with some other equally good (or, as the case may be, not good) program is like snuffing out your family dog and replacing it with some slightly better-trained breed. It is not the same thing.

I'll break it down for you since reading comprehension is an issue for you.

Walmart Wolverine - an Ohioan that became a fan of Michigan to be the different kid. No real reason other than being an a-hole.

Butthurt - Ohio State didn't offer soon enough for them

Overlooked - Ohio State never offered

The population shift stuff is a farce. The midwest still produces as many if not more top pro athletes than any other region

The incentive having a winning program if that's what they want. Every team in the SEC has been to at least 1 bowl in the last 5 years. Vanderbilt is going to a bowl for the 2nd year in a row for the first time ever. South Carolina has won 10 games 2 years in a row. Miss State is paying Mullen $2M. Its not like a pro team, where the owner can just pocket the extra cash, so if Indiana doesn't put it into their program, what are they doing with it? I hope they have the best library in the B1G

With the addition of Rutgers, the Big10 will have 11 of the Top 50 largest...the SEC has 3.

That about sums it up.
