In five weeks with the Rangers, Gomez has seven homers and 21 RBIs in 106 at-bats.

The change started with hitting coaches Anthony Iapoce and Justin Mashore.

They made mechanical changes in Gomez’s swing that give him a firmer back side and allow him to use his hands. That allows Gomez to be on time for more pitches.

In the past, he was late on many pitches and tried to catch up with big swings that usually ended with flailing misses and the batting helmet flying off his head.

Iapoce and Mashore also have Gomez thinking more like a hitter than a slugger. He is batting .366 in his last 41 at-bats.

“You’ve got to hit before you slug,” Banister said. “He’s allowing himself a better chance to hit. With that, the confidence grows. ... We’ve seen him get to some balls that the big boys hit a long ways, and he’s done that.

“He’s in a pretty good place now. We like what we see.”

Gomez said the Rangers have repaired his damaged confidence with constant encouragement. His only regret is that it took so long to get into this situation.

“I cannot imagine what I can do in 162 games with what I have now,” Gomez said.

This was written before last night where he went 3/4 w/a single, double, 3 run HR (that put the Rangers up in the 8th) and a walk.

This year in 85 games and 295 AB w/the Astros he hit .210 w/5 HR, 29 RBI, 21 BB, 100 SO, .272 OBP, .322 SLG, and .594 OPS.

Sounds like the Astros need to hire a new hitting coach.

Hitting .366 in 40+ AB's is nice and all, but it's not very sustainable. How's he getting on base? Is he walking more and striking out less?

Good for him, though.

I have no clue who Carlos Gomez is.

We have a guy named Carlos GOATmez, but that's the closest I can think of.

Yeah, this was what I read about on r/baseball and r/astros. Gomez said in his first week with Texas that our hitting coaches had him working on things that he didn't even know about when it comes to hitting.

You sure boss? People said Texas' run differential and their win percentage was unsustainable literally all season long. Guess what, it didn't matter.

Pretty much what most Astros fans have been saying for almost 2 years now.

Except Ryno. He is of the expert mindset that a hitting coach is simply a figurehead and really doesn't do anything.

He'll have your kids hitting .200, striking out 300 times, swinging for the moon and hitting 20 HR.

Of course 366 is unsustainable. But his 291 average is certainly sustainable. And while he won't hit THIS many home runs, he does give the Rangers another legit power threat in the lineup.

Also, short series and all. Anything can happen.

Probably so. Believe it or not, Gomez hada stretch in June where he hit .300 over 80 at bats. 5 doubles 4 homers 15 RBI. But his .385 BAbip crashed back to Earth and he hit .169 over his next 83 at bats until got released.

His BAbip over this 40 AB hot streak is over .400. Not sustainable.

I'm not saying he is going to bat over.400 for the rest of the season, but it certainly isn't out of the question to expect him to hit .290 or so the rest of the way.

He's been the best leadoff hitter in the league in September and I could honestly care less if he never gets a hit again, as long as that doesn't start until like November 10

The dude is 30 years old and a 9 year vet in the show. He shouldn't still need a hitting coach to so him how to hit. He is a bum and will soon go back to his bum ways.

You clearly don't know anything about hitting.

He's an above average major league hitter. Always has been. Maybe not with the Astros, but he's produced every other season. He's not a bum.

A change of scenery was needed for both parties. No ill will to Carlos hearing all this doesn't make me angry at him or really even the Rangers. Just makes me disappointed in hunch and our coaching staff.

This goes to show that baseball still uses human beings and stats can't tell you everything.
