Golf just needs an interesting champion with universal appeal, preferably American.
Think of the best current golfers:
Spieth, albeit great, isn't very interesting.
Rory is a boring interview, plus he's not American. He does play with flair and hook up with supermodels and stuff.
Justin Rose, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott are probably next in line. DJ has potential with Paulina and his 8-ball afflictions. The other guys are just "nice guys" (meaning boring).
So we basically need DJ to actually win majors then subsequently go a huge public bender to make headlines.

Dont see how what he said was wrong.
Diversity and difference faces can only help the brand globalize, bring in different and untapped talent, and hetp the business.
It is true that people need to gravitate towards those that seem similar to them, even if its just a shallow phenotypical similarity.
Golf staying old and white will send it into the death spiral that major league baseball is currently in. If they want to stay antiquated and resemble the 1950s, then time will tell if that will be a business practice that lasts or has staying power

What? I would wager without looking there are more brown international players in baseball than ever before. Andrew McCutchen is one of the biggest faces in the game and he is dark as night.
