Ara Parseghian, the charismatic Hall of Fame coach who woke up the echoes at Notre Dame, restoring the Fighting Irish to football glory in the 1960s and 1970s with two national championships and an innovative, psychologically astute approach to coaching, died Aug. 2 at his home in Granger, Ind. He was 94.
University of Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins issued a statement announcing the death. Mr. Parseghian had recently been treated for a hip infection.
Mr. Parseghian (pronounced par-SEEG-yun) took over the head coaching job of perhaps the country’s most storied college football team in 1964, after rebuilding the fortunes of perennial Big Ten doormat Northwestern University.
Notre Dame had been a gridiron powerhouse since the turn of the 20th century, building a nationwide following under coaches Knute Rockne, Elmer Layden and Frank Leahy. Since Leahy’s retirement in 1953, the Irish had descended into mediocrity, with an abysmal 2-7 record in 1963.
The intense, handsome Mr. Parseghian immediately brought a new sense of order, rebuilding the team’s reputation at the same time Notre Dame’s president, the Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, was transforming the Catholic university in South Bend into a preeminent academic institution.

I read in Fighting Tigers Vol 2 that BR was rampant with rumors that he was going to come to LSU after Cholly Mac left. Even to the point that his wife had bought a house on Highland Road

I bet they were tracking horse and buggy numbers.

I'm pretty sure Rudy's coach wasn't Parseghian but Dan Devine.
I met Coach P once, he gave a brief talk at Northwestern (where he coached before ND) and he came off as tough as nails but also a player coach, the kind you'd want your kid to play for.
Prayers to his family and many friends. A damn good coach, an even better man.

Rudy was there for both. Devine was the coach when he got on the field.

Parseghian was Rudy's initial coach. He was played by Father Damian Karras.

Next to Rockne, much of Notre Dame's football mystique is tied to Parseghian's tenure in South Bend

so does this mean he is not looking for a house on Highland Road?

Leahy always gets the short shrift in these conversations.

He was Rudy's coach initially. If you remember, he agreed to let him dress out for a game.
Then, Dan Devine was brought in and Rudy was bummed out because he didn't believe Devine would honor Parsehian's commitment. Hence why all the players took their jerseys before Devine and said, "This is for Rudy" (which didn't really happen btw).
