quote:

With the Olympics set to begin in less than three months in Rio de Janeiro, one of Brazil's most successful soccer players has a surprisingly ominous message for international visitors: Stay away.

Brazil is getting "more ugly," said Rivaldo, who was on the country's 2002 World Cup-winning squad, forming part of a lethal attacking trio with Ronaldo and Ronaldinho.

Rivaldo warned people on social media about the violence plaguing the city, citing the killing of a 17-year-old girl over the weekend.

The message is likely to frustrate the country's leaders, who have been trying to dispel the notion that Brazil is not ready for the games and Rio is not safe for tourists.

quote:

But violence is just one problem that Brazil is facing ahead of the games. The coastal city of Recife is considered ground zero for the deadly Zika virus. A host of countries have issued travel warnings for areas affected by the virus, which is carried by mosquitoes. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable because the virus can cause birth defects.

Brazilian leaders are also dealing with an economic downturn and corruption scandal that may have ensnared President Dilma Rousseff and her predecessor. She was in the process of being impeached, but those proceedings took an unusual twist Tuesday.

quote:

It's not clear if all the venues and infrastructure will be ready. And water quality is also a concern for those who will compete in Rio's Guanabara Bay, which has been polluted by sewage.

I know we all thought the Sochi games were bad, but Rio may take it to a whole new level.

i'm going to sound like a broken record, but it's a social justice thing, at least publicly

these international organizations want to stop "excluding" the developing world from these events

the thought process goes: you've done a great job developing your nation. we want you to showcase that to the world

now, if you want to get cynical, it's also an easier avenue to get bribes because the odds of corruption are much higher in these countries

the sad irony is that these events are largely money losers, so it's bad for a state like brazil (Who is getting double fricked by the world cup and the olympics)

No one else wants them- the most recent bidding for the Olympic came down to Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Beijing (China). Beijing won and it wouldn't be a bad site but it doesn't snow there, which is a problem for the Winter Olympics.

Norway, Poland, Sweden all dropped out citing cost.

I was in Rio for the World Cup, and I thought they did a great job. I always felt safe and had an awesome time.

B/c the IOC has so many demands and requirements for the host country that it has become insane.

No longer can a country host and simply use existing infrastructure and stadiums. They basically have to transform the city into what the IOC wants. It isn't worth it.

Look at the abandoned Olympic park in Sochi. Nothing is being used there from the Winter Olympics now.

Brazil WC Stadiums One Year After

quote:

Nearly a year after the 2014 World Cup, many of the 12 stadiums Brazil built and renovated for the event have fallen into disuse.

quote:

Brazil spent more than $3 billion on the stadiums, some of which were built in far-flung locations without popular local professional teams to sustain them after the tournament. A year later, some sit empty and others are running at a loss, and even the stadiums that host regular domestic games have been plagued by disputes between the clubs and the stadium operators.

Academics have long argued that building stadiums for one-off sporting events like the World Cup and Olympics isn't a wise investment. Across Brazil, taxpayers and local officials are finding that out the hard

they knew it wasn't a good idea economically for the country, but that wasn't the point of building them. The article had to go out of the way to not state the obvious but it was interesting reading.

Should move it to LA. LA could easily pull off a better olympics in 4 months than the shite show (quite literally) that is Rio.

If anything, it will likely help LA get the 2024 Games (IOC will vote on the bids next year).

As was I. No problems here. Only difference is all the events are near Rio as opposed to spread throughout the country.

Rio is safer than than St. Louis and Detroit. We'll see what happens when the time comes, but there's usually big time negativity leading up to an Olympic Games. See Sochi, Beijing, London, etc.

Nobody wants the winter olympics. The summer games are still a hot commodity.

I'm glad we're pawning these events off onto less developed countries. The smarter, top of the line countries know it's a bad deal for the host country, but less developed countries don't know that, so we can make them pay for the events instead of us
