Forbes 2017 Business of Basketball
Other notes:

Warriors jumped to the 3rd most valuable franchise after Lakers and Knicks.

Rockets come in at 8.

Pelicans lowest value at $750m. But was bought for $330m has income of $16m/yr.

The Knicks have been shut out of the playoffs since 2013, but they are reaping the rewards of a $1 billion renovation of Madison Square Garden, which produced new revenue opportunities from sponsorships and seating. The team turned an NBA-record operating profit of $141 million last season despite a 32-50 tally on the hardwood. It was the first season of the team’s new local cable deal with MSG, which paid $100 million in year one.
- Knicks still minting cash.
quote:

Operating profits are at a record high—an average of $31 million per team. Owners, meanwhile, are salivating at what’s on the immediate horizon: a new seven-year collective bargaining agreement that secures labor peace through the 2023–24 season, and the start of a nine-year, $24 billion national TV deal this season with ESPN and TNT worth triple the previous annual amount. Operating profits could double this season.

But it's targeting too many black poeple...

Smh. This league is in terrific shape and will continue to thrive as the NFL continues to become frustrating to watch

The massive growth in value is cause of huge tv deals which won't be there next time around

If you took the time to read the article you realize that that wasn't really true. It's one of the many factors, along with international growth and arena revenue that has caused values to rise.

What happens when espn and TNT don't have $2.7 bil per year for the NBA cause cordcutting has destroyed their revenue?

TV deals will crumble across all sports.

Im wondering if all sports will go to a cheap PPV model to make up for cord cutting and content stealing

Like watching a LSU football game is gonna cost you $5 or something.

ESPN is bleeding cash, and Disney has had enough of it.

NBA got their last big deal.

The money is still there. It'll just come from difference sources. Amazon or google or Apple. The one thing people are still watching are LIVE sports. They don't want to watch J Hill do political talk but they want to watch the NFL or the NBA. Leagues will get smarter about getting their revenue.

Not way those leagues will have enough subscribers to match the revenue they are making or exceed it.

I think one network will not have read the tea leaves about the changing TV landscape and pony up a headscratching deal. After that, it's over as far as traditional network rights packages.

if you asked a majority of people with cable if they would pay 8-10$ a month for the NBA I bet 80% or more say no way.

This is true for every sport.

The nfl is the most popular sport in the country and less than 15% of the country watches regularly

got to remember good NBA Finals games struggle to do 10%. Most games in a local market do between 1 and 5. there are lots of hipsters who try to make sure their bar is showing the Walking Dead or Game of Thrones, etc., and lots of people who go to those bars. the NBA's preferred demographic isn't very big
