Finding Charles Rogers

quote:
Charles Rogers walked into the Michigan State University football building for the first time in 15 years on a cold cloudy day last November.
He'd been reluctant to return to the campus where he’d been a star, worried that the disappointments were all anybody would remember.
Without prompting from former MSU teammate TJ Duckett, he might not have come.
“I was facing my fear, bro,” Rogers said, skinny now, emphatically throwing his tattooed arms into the air.
But inside the Skandalaris Football Center that day, he and Duckett found themselves in front of a pillar encased in glass. Rogers' photo was inside along with a replica of the 2002 Biletnikoff Trophy, given to the nation’s top wide receiver.
quote:
The trophy case was a reminder of what Rogers once was. Of spectacular leaping touchdown grabs and roaring crowds at Spartan Stadium on Saturdays. Of the fact that, in two seasons, he hauled in 135 passes for 2,821 yards and a school record 27 touchdowns.
On the other side of the case was a 2002 edition of Sporting News with Rogers on the cover, screaming as he glides through the air.
“Meet college football’s best player” it read in bold white letters.
It was the smaller headline on the front that kept Rogers away for all these years.
“Size. Speed. Hands. Charles Rogers has it all – including a very bright future in the NFL.”
That was true — once.

Hot take. He got hurt like five games into his career, got hooked on painkillers, stayed hooked on painkillers and couldn't stay healthy. He was ridiculously talented, I'll never forget that absolutely absurd catch he made to beat Notre Dame

I had an absolutely deadly thunder/lightning duo with him and Michael Bennett in Madden 04

Every Charles Rogers fanboy still left to white knight for him is in this thread apparently.

Charles Rogers has the best rap of all time for his Madden draft day commercial. "I'm...Charles Rogers....had 68 catches and 13 touchdowns..." Im sure it can be found on YouTube.
Yep...GOAT

The worst possible thing that could happen to him did...Matt Millen on draft day.
Also sticking around his home state with all his posse and a fat wad of new cash burning through his pockets certainly didn't help...the leeches drained him dry.

Ducket was awesome to watch in college
remember when there was just no way joey harrington could fail with a deadly trio or WRs in Rodgers, Mike Williams, and Roy Williams

Its a shame he never became what he was supposed to be, but it was the Lions. The Charles Rogers pick was prime Lions whiffing on top 5 picks

Tj duckett was the tiptoeing-ist motherfricker to every play a down of football in the NFL

Rogers has yet to be inducted into the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame. Durrett has sent the paperwork to Rogers, but never receives an answer. He is on the ballot again this year. Durrett hasn't heard from him.
