About a year and a half ago or so it was announced that David Ross would take over as manager of the Chicago Cubs and I wasn't too happy about it. Here's the thread for reference: LINK

Well, I was wrong. The Cubs are doing surprisingly well. Granted it's still early in the season and less than a month from the all-star break but this is a team nobody expected to be competitive this year. Possibly finishing third or fourth in the NL Central.

Now they sit tied with a red hot Brewers team atop the division and had just swept the Cardinals this past weekend. They hold a 9-4 record against a red hot NL West, including sweeping the LA Dodgers at home and a 5-1 record against a very good Padres team.

The biggest surprise this year is the bullpen which is top of the NL and Ross has done a superb job in managing it well. It certainly helps Kimbrel seems to be returning to his old self as well.

So, I admit I am wrong about Ross. Now excuse me while I eat this crow.

They could collapse at any time but has been a pleasant surprise for what is a retooling year

What record would you predict through 65 games if I told You not a single Cubs Starter would have an ERA under 4.

It’s kind insane that we’re winning.

Of course most of our hitters are in co tract years so it almost makes sense.

True, the 2019 season is still fresh in my mind. Going from 2 games out of the NLC lead and in the top wild card spot in mid-Sept to going 2-10 with an embarrassing sweeps by the Cardinals and of all teams the Pirates.

And really outside of Bryant they have underperformed

Contreras is .237/.336/.437
Rizzo is .265/.360/.445
Baez is .236/.302/.473
Heyward is .172/.255/.310

Heyward has a million years left on his contract. He’ll rake in 2037 though

Cubs will be interesting at the deadline with Bryant, Contreras, Baez, Happ, Kimbrel, Arrieta, Hendricks, Williams, and Brothers who could all snatch some type of prospect moving forward. Obviously Bryant is the big one followed by Baez and Contreras

I just Don’t think you can sell while you’re hit and in first place

You can, maybe not a complete firesale but the Cubs could move Kimbrel and others for pieces to help their future.

But you are right the optics look bad, team needs to determine do they think they can win the World Series with the roster + a couple of pieces or would it be better to retool and go again in 2-3 years

He's not awful, he just got stale.

There was only so long the underdog thing would last. You could tell after the WS year the team just got lackadaisical and tried to rely purely on talent.

You need 2 top starting pitchers to do this. They had 1 and traded them for prospects. Their current SP's aren't good enough to win a WS.

I haven’t watched a lot of games this year, but I wasn’t crazy about the hire either.

I was surprised to see Jason Heyward was still on the roster. That guy is past washed up.

Wut

Contreras and Baez are near the top of most offensive categories for their position in the MLB. Contreras is leader in the clubhouse for the silver slugger and Baez would be right there with Tatis and Crawford

Rizzo is a notoriously slow starter and he still has an OPS+ of 126

Heyward is a platoon guy and defensive replacement at this point

They’re about to lose 3/4 in queens. JD Davis and a minor league arm for Bryant.

Contreras is hitting below his career average as his career is .262/.336/.469/.809 and he is below that
Baez is hitting below his career average as it is .262/.302/.473/.774

Blame the ball or whatever but considering their career averages they are underperforming or is this a sign of what they are capable of without juiced ball.

Posey, Molina, and Smith have a better shot and you are missing Trea Turner and even the sorry year the Story is having he is right there with Baez

The kids we traded Darvosh for are not 2-3 years away from winning a WS. If we sell we’re pushing for the late 2020s unless they all arrive ready and ahead of schedule and pan out at a crazy rate.

The Core is the players we ranked to get and to turn around and let them walk or trade them before their first real contract like they own the fricking Tampa Bay Rays and not one of the most valuable franchises in sports is wild.

They fully expected this team to tank so they could justify selling off all the pieces. I get there in a rough position.

Bryant is outperforming almost every season he’s ever had except MAYBE his MVP season.

Rizzo is down.
Baez is all homers.
I am Not gonna say shite about Contreras because he hits well for a catcher, walks and plays good defenses. Pay the man his worth which still shouldn’t be nuts
