It just doesn't make sense. Why do teams let the defense control the tempo of the game? Continue letting the defense play the game, and let the offense dictate the pace of the game. It the defense gets a 3 and out, the offense can in turn, run the ball and essentially run the clock. No opposing team that is down is going to want to waste timeouts when they have the ball, so force them to use those timeouts to stop us from running the clock down.
