ESPN personalities suggest NFL thinks its fans are racist, raise theory on rule changes to favor White players

ESPN personalities Bomani Jones and Domonique Foxworth floated the idea that the NFL will be concerned if more Black quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts start to become the face of the sport instead of White quarterbacks like Josh Allen and Joe Burrow.

Jones and Foxworth, a former NFL defensive back who was also the vice president of the NFL Players Association Executive Committee, talked about the idea on the latest episode of "The Right Time with Bomani Jones." The two started to talk about how the Philadelphia Eagles were acquiring all of these former Georgia Bulldogs players before Foxworth began on his point.

Jackson and Hurts both became the highest-paid players in the NFL with their latest contract extensions with the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively.

"Before we get to the Eagles and how scary that is, something just hit me – there’s gonna be some rule changes in the NFL," Foxworth said. "They ‘gon do something. And you may be looking at me like I’m crazy, but wait ‘til I explain something to you, then you’re gonna be like, ‘yup, they about to fix this.’

"Who’s the best quarterback in football? Patrick Mahomes? Who’s the two highest-paid players in all the league? Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts. Who are the first three quarterbacks drafted in this draft? Black dudes. … Oh, we got a rule change coming down the pike."

Jones said "something has fundamentally changed" when teams refused to select quarterback Will Levis in the first round. Three of the first four selections – Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson – were quarterbacks and all of whom are Black.

"Guys, as crazy as you think this is. I’ll never forget the first time I saw Harry Edwards speak and he was talking about the quarterback position and when (Michael) Vick, (Daunte) Culpepper, you know that run of dudes started coming, what they did was they started making those punitive roughing the passer penalties where if you just touch the guy on the helmet that you got 15 yards ‘cus they had to slow up those defensive backs … Guys, it’s turning into a problem where can’t nobody even talk themselves into Will Levis, right? Something has fundamentally changed," Jones said.

Only people who think about race 24/7 would say this. The reason Will Levis didn’t go in the first round is because he puts mayo in his coffee and he sucks. Nobody cares if there are more black quarterbacks in the nfl or the face of the league.

Black journalists like Bomani fuel racism against blacks, then complain when people are racist.

I like how journalists flip his race based off what's being talked about.

If Bomani couldn’t talk about racism, he’d never speak again

I don’t understand the point being made here. They’re saying roughing the passer started getting called more when black quarterbacks started getting drafted? And they’re insinuating that’s a bad thing?

Someone help me out here.

Not unreasonable to think. The NBA was way too black. The rule changes allowed for European whites to actually compete in the NBA.

Europeans were always seen as soft and finesse. The NBA removed the physicality and now European players are amongst the best in the entire league.

The NFL should do what's best for it's bottom line.

Exactly. That transcript is gibberish. Maybe they were talking tongue in cheek? Otherwise, it’s literal gibberish.

I started to post your same comment.

So they are supposedly worried about black quarterbacks being the face of the league, and insinuate future rule changes to prevent/stall this from happening, but as evidence use a shift in rule enforcement that benefits all quarterbacks including black ones?

Yea, this is how I interpreted it as well, so i don't get it either.

Aren't the running QBs of the past, on average sacked more than non running QBs? If that's the case, stricter roughing penalties would have helped the black QBs(assuming those are the running QBs, which of course is a pretty good assumption) more than it would help the white QBs, so I have no clue how that example is used as evidence to show that a rule change against black QBs is coming.

Yes, it sure did kill the NBA. You know, the sport where they play 82 regular season games, then 2 months of playoffs. WITHOUT helmets.

I would say I'm not sure about that but I would suggest that ESPN personalities will worry about it whether the NFL does or not.

ESPN will definitely worry about this, also a chance the NFL will think about it. However there is a 100% chance the fans do not give a shite about the race of the QB, they just want their team to be successful
