It's so stupid and as I'm sure has been pointed out in the thread, seems like some political deal like Congress with steroids. Go bust some terrorists and stay out of this crap.

SDNY is a big political position

I heard that Adidas had the payouts in their books as non-profit donations.

ETA: I don't know if that is true though.

That's my understanding. Fake invoices.

You are missing the point.

Scholarships are "on the record".

To keep money changing hands away from the NCAA, you also have to keep it away from the government.

Government does not get it's taxes. Government gives grants to people who would not qualify if they reported their Nike income. Hence, fraud.

The FBI has taken some black eyes over the last couple years with the Clinton email saga. They have to remind people they are still a thing. Nothing like a high profile bust.

Those players who took money are also facing tax evasion charges down the road. And FWIW: Finebaum said his sources are telling him that the NCAA was hearing a lot of this information during one of its own investigations of a school but knew it would never have the funding to prove any of it, so it passed on what info it had to the ongoing FBI investigation. But there was a snitch who rolled over, big time, to get the ball rolling.

it looks like in most if not all cases it's the parents and handlers that are getting the money not the kids. that's for sure going to be teh case with reggie perry

I'm just not understanding the hoopla over "oooohh shite pitino was paying recruits" as if other big schools aren't doing the same.

I'm wondering if the FBI is maybe working on the 'mobbed-up' angle. There's a lot of money in gambling, and it can be used to fuel a lot of other illicit things.

If you're involved in paying a kid $100,000, how easy is it to put a word in his ear once in a while suggesting he shouldn't work quite so hard in this particular game? Ditto for the coaches - they've got their drift nets in a big money stream -- what might they be willing to do to keep it up?

I haven't heard anything, don't have any contacts, and am not impugning any of the people whose names have been mentioned so far; I just think that's a plausible explanation for the Feds to do a long investigation.

The best was Hawaii football a few years ago when their QB suddenly forgot how to throw in the second half

I understand what they are doing but what probed them to do it? And is it even neccessary?

It's complicated, but outlined pretty well in a detailed article Schlabach wrote yesterday for ESPN. Yeah, ESPN sucks, but Schlabach lays it out well.

You can find the article.

i think it's a catch 22 scenario for the time being

you claim that as income and you're effectively putting yourself in the hot box for the charges they claim now

you don't claim that as income and you're running the risk that even if they don't win on these charges, you go to jail for that

We were always taught in fraud and tax classes that if you are doing illegal shite just put it on your taxes. You can be creative with what you call the income its not like you put "Illegal shite".

It removes a significant piece of leverage from the feds if you have 100% paid up on your income

ELI5: why is the FBI going after the NCAA? by vengeanceofrain because i've personally been indcited with 56 coubts of wire fraud and 1 count if conspiracy to commit wire fraud and a year later they didn't e ven bother to take it too trial tehy knew their casea was bullshite and dropped all charges.. i stil have the 58 page indictment in my work room... anytime I think of seriousy doing anything bad i look at it and change my mind i know exactly how the feds work and that guy above me is dead on. they use their repuitation and the scare of gaguantion senstences to get you to corprate....when i can go to jail for 20 years and they are ooffering me 18 months club fed, at that point it doesnt' matter if you even did it or not and feds jail time is not like state they don't parole in feds. You're going to do at the very least 85% of the time so when tehy say 20 years they mean legit 18-19 years. at that point u roll over just to get it over with, rather you did it or not but when you get past they are so worried about their conviciton rate, if it's questionable at all they will reduce charges and or drop charges they legit did tax evaisioon. they are going to have to deal with that.
