So, if ESPN is going to pay all of these people through the duration of their contract, why not just tell them to continue working and that they will not renew their contract when it expires?

True, but I imagine a lot of these folks will get offers from competitors quickly, and many of them won't want to turn down a good opportunity to sit at home and get paid with the hopes that another good opportunity will be waiting for them when their contract ends.

I'd guess a lot of them actually like their jobs, and who knows, could have 2+ years on their contracts remaining. That's really not a good thing to go away for 2 years, you probably won't be able to land a job like you could if you strike now.

So, all in all, I'm guessing ESPN is banking on them getting new jobs pretty quickly.

Typical non compete contract terms. I worked for a company that wanted managers to sign a non compete where they paid you for one year but you couldn't compete for 2. I said no, was demoted but without a pay decrease. Ended up going to work for someone else with a fat bonus to sign.

You make excellent points. Over saturation of analyzation. Give me an hour worth of pregame with 4 analysts. Show the game. Give me a 30 minute recap of game with the same 4 analysts and call it a day. I don't need to hear or watch 70 percent if their programming. Too many people work at ESPN. It seemed like a simpler time when Brent Musburger, Irv Cross and the Greek were doing pregame shows.

So if you have a contract with ESPN , and are laid off, they will honor your contract as long as you dont work for another network ? Sounds like a perfect time to take time with your family , vacation ,etc. until your contract expires.. win win ?

Which just proves that these lay offs have as much to do with some twisted social experiment than money and on air content. Why would you lay off someone like this days before one of the biggest NFL events. Lay him off even though your going to pay out his contract? Then ask him to work the draft makes no sense. Why would you not just let him work the remainder of the contract?

circa 2007 they had 2 separate episodes of NFL Live every god damn day, and they had about 15-20 NFL analyst. I'm happy those days are over
