Patrick Willis and Jake Locker both hung it up this week. One is a likely HoFer. The other, not so much. But they both walked away with something left in the tank. I can't help thinking the concussion revelations had something to do with it, and that we'll be seeing more.

And 10s of millions. They made their generational money. Hire an advisor and go to Tahiti.

Jake Locker is just a glass body, his tank was broken in half every year.

Now Willis, I can see two reasons. He feels like the SF uppers betrayed the players. Pretty much saying frick it and blew it up.

or

The fact is that he just didn't want to go through anymore pain, he will have chronic foot pain, but at least he can still run and walk. Imagine being 55 and using a cane, I'm sure he did too.

or both.

Exactly. Collect your 10-20 million and punch out.

Make millions, put your money somewhere safe, leave with functional brain. Good job by both guys.

Rashard Mendenhall was the original. I loved his exit.

But I do think you'll see more of this. Some guys are actually heeding the lessons their predecessors learned the hard way, regarding both money and long-term health. Plus, frick Goodell.

Probably? He cost himself AT LEAST 10 million by waiting and getting fricked when they changed the rookie contracts. I hope he is still happy though, he has every reason to be.

I said on this board months ago that we will start to see more athletes, even stars, retire in their prime. With all the evidence about concussions and how much these players make, it's inevitable. Why destroy your body when you're already set for life? You want to enjoy your money, not be miserable. Not every guy has the competitive drive to keep going until they're 40 or have nothing left. Some guys just want to make a living and prove that they can do it.

I believe it was this summer when I argued this would happen here on the MSB and there was pages of people laughing at me and calling me stupid, but here are two good examples already. This will become more and more normal.

@PFF: Jason Worilds retiring. He had 50 pressures last year which put him among the top 10 for 3-4 OLBs.

2 players does not make a shift

Locker probably is a realist about his football skill and knows he's done but thinks he still got baseball to try

There are probably so many reasons involved (most are probably listed), but also people get burnt out. If I could have taken about 80 million to the bank after 8 years of travel ball I would have. Instead I got burnt out on the sport and started a new one while making 0 dollars.

Willis has been in the league for a minute and has made his cash. Props to him for getting out early before he gets his bell wrung.

Locker is a nobody who has never done anything nor will do anything. Probably just saw his future working for ESPNU vice being a perminate backup in some shithole city. Why keep playing backup when you can make more cash working for the mothership?

As soon as I heard Willis was retiring it kind of shocked me that more players weren't doing this. I mean not everyone is ready to hang it up with leaving $$ on the table, but it seems like a genius move if you've made some $$ and can still walk.
